Who is "Super Stroke"?? From the 90's....

I don't want to take sides, and I understand both sides of the arguement, however,

During the 70's and into the 80's the vast majority of the income of british snooker players was from exhibitions. Alex Higgins recieved the exposure that he did from his exhibitions. If it wasn't for his shows, the small tabloid coverage of his antics would have gone largely unnoticed at the beginning of his career imo. People who didn't know the blue was worth 5 was coming to see him before the World Championships had full BBC coverage.

The benefit is that people who come to exhibition are likely to tune into ESPN when they see that player competing. Or they may come to the event if it is in town.

Well said Cameron....exposure leads to more exposure. Most people in the states at one time have seen Mike Massey do trick shots on TV, you could ask most any person and they probably know who he is....its hard and fruitful work, Mike's been on the road 6 months out of the year most of his life doing exhibitions.

And no one ever told him he couldn't play pool! ;)

The guy in the picture is not "Bruce Christopher". My memory isn't what it used to be but if I remember correctly, the "Superstroke" in the photo is named "Steve". He used to live in the Dallas area and could be found hanging around CJ's pool room. I recall seeing him carry around a little notepad at a few tournaments and if I'm not mistaken, he was a small time bookie making lines on the matches. I recall him talking about the lines on a few matches in his notepad but I can't remember for sure if he was making them or betting on them.

The only two people that post on here that I can think of that could confirm if my memory is serving me correctly or not, would be Mr. Incardona or possibly Grady. They're the only two guys playing on the tour during that time frame that I'm aware of that post here. Are they willing to confirm or not, I don't know. They're from the "old school" pool world where some things aren't talked about to the masses, but reserved for those that need to know.

I don't remember his name or his sons, but when I played at Champs which later became CJ's in the early 90's he was always trying to get in on any action. His main game was setting someone up to be robbed. I took him and his son for a few thousand. I haven't seen him around in many years. Someone that he set up may have caught up with him.

Who is "Super Stroke"?? From the 90's....

> George Fels made a reference once to a self-proclaimed pool champion that posed in Playgirl with a real-deal Balabushka. George heard about it and cut the guy off from ordering any more cues. Was this him?

In another video later in the same tournament the OP mentions,Mataya shows up with Billy and Grady to do guest commentary for the Mike Sigel/Jim Rempe match, and Superstroke was mentioned.

Grady also mentioned his short-change abilities in another match. Tommy D.

Bingo! That guy is not Bruce Christopher. Bruce is a blonde who would be near 60 years old now. He was around way back in the 70's and promoted himself as "Superstroke". He claimed to be a great player and actually got himself on TV with Fats once. He was a C player who was all hype and had no play. A "pool imposter" we used to call guys like him. More of a con man than a pool player. He saw what Fats was able to accomplish and he tried to do the same thing. He did manage to get some publicity in the pool media 25-30+ years ago. That's about it. Unlike Fats who was the real deal, a lifetime pool hustler who knew everyone, and really gambled for high stakes.

Bruce was a phony all the way. In the early 90's, he did come out and challenge anyone to play for a million dollars. He DIDN'T say he was going to win, just play them for a million. Do you see the con he had planned? Now I'll tell you some things you don't know and very few people do. Bruce was one of the best "short change" artists alive (and probably still is). That's how he made his living all these years. He would resurface from time to time around poolrooms and let everyone know Superstroke was in town, but he would NEVER play anyone who could play. That would have been way too risky.

He has been in trouble with the law more than once, and for all I know, could be in jail today. Superstroke was one of the most inept pool con man of all time. Trudough reminded me of him when he started making claims of running 200 balls. Another egocentric liar.

nice post!

what an ego

I think john needs to learn a little respect for other people! Its common knowledge thats fats wasnt the best player or even close to it but, but ajust for inflation and im sure john you wont earn close to what fats earned in his lifetime playing. Thats should earn you some respect for the man!

Old school thinking of past has always been if I play better than you....then I know more than you. In reality, by showing you hand in this manner your actually showing how little you really know about life.

really

Sorry Island Drive i misunderstood your point, ty Jay for pointing that out to me

Sadly i think you are the one that needs some life lessons.

Stomper, I think you misunderstood Island Drive's post #67. I don't think he was referring specifically to you. You just took it that way. Why not reread it and see if you get my point. He was actually in agreement with you.

I think you both made good points here and there is no need to start putting anyone down. I've known this guy (ID) for a long, long time and he is not the kind of guy who looks to offend anyone.

Thanks Again jay

After reading it once again i realized you were correct. Damn caffeine got me going a little too quickly !lol
