who is the best all around pool player?

id guess efren, but not right now, maybe 5-10 years ago.

WHAT are you smokin'? I guess winning King of the Table at the DCC AGAIN this past year was a fluke...BAAAAAAAAHAHAHAHAAHA!!! Too  funny

Efren Reyes, of course. Best eightballer and best one-pocket player, top ten nineballer.

Thorsten Hohmann gets honorable mention, as he's starting to look like he may be both the best nineballer and straight pooler.

Who? ................

Efren,

First straight pool tournament he's running 100 or more. The commentators are talking about how "different" he runs out the racks than most....but again - he is Reyes, a genius.

One Pocket - undisputed best there has ever been at one pocket. Controls the cue ball too well, very creative, strong shotmaker, deadly kicks..WOW!

Nine Ball - Top 5. If he had a stronger break he would be number one. That has always slowed him down.

Rotation - I heard he was the BEST rotation player in the PI.

What can you say? Reyes was born to play pool.

Now...who is MY favorite player? Mike Sigel.
Who is Reyes' favorite player? Mike Sigel.

Similar thread by me was made not too long ago. This thread went in so many directions. Who, what game, what era, in their prime, how many titles they held etc. I'm still saying Efren, but others seem to have their own opinion and that's ok. This world would be boring if everybody agreed, on everything.

I'll say Efren cause he has proof of his all aroundnes...from 9-ball to snooker..

Efren is your man....

I can't believe that there are some players out there that somehow believe that he is not currently the best all around or that he is definately on the decline...I wish they would do their homework and tally up all the winner names from the last 3 years from all the major events world wide. Believe me, Efren's name will appear more than any other player...GUARANTEED....

Thanks again..

Mr. J.

Efren ...l

Efren is to Pool what Tiger is to golf...

He is the most overall skilled Pool player there is.
His knowledge of banks, kick shots, is unsurpassed by
any other player. Now, if I could just stop calling him
Charlie .... lol

I'm the best ALL AROUND pool player......but thats just because theres no one around me at the moment

Efren. No contest.

And anyone who continues to lament this "Efren's Weak Break" stuff hasn't seen him play in the past 5 years. Anyone who watched the DCC 10-ball ring witnessed Efren's "weak break." He revved it up as hard as anyone in the ring match.

all i can say is....

watch the 1996 HK invitatioanal exhibition match... you'll have you answer there...
watch the one pocket match between Efren and Grady... you'll have your answer there...
watch the 2000 US Open 14.1 championships, Reyes vs West... you'll have your answer there....
watch the 1999 WPC... especially the semis...

the 2001 Accu-Stats 8-ball invitational, 1995 Sands Regency Finals... etc...

hope no one will flame me... :D:D:D

Not gonna flame you but you could do that pick and choose thing for about 10 different players in a case to claim they are the best. You bounced around alot to pick Efren's key moments where he was at his best, I notice you did not pick the moments when he was not... Kind of a biased sample to see a persons true game. I could do the same thing for Sigel, Rempe, Varner, ect... picking only their best showings and making them look unstoppable. I am not saying Efren is not the best all around, atm I think that is for sure largely because he actually plays all the games and alot of other top players instead stick to the main professional game and ignore the others.

This whole thread is a loaded question. People have asked who was the best pool player of all time and the people in Efren's corner always fall back to his multi disipline dominance and ignore the fact that alot of the top players today simply dont play 8-ball or 1-pocket so it is not exactly like Efren has a tough time getting that title when he actually plays the games some, especially 1-pocket. Efren is the best all around player of games that matter little and few people play. Pure skill with a cue, I will take Mosconi, I have seen him at about 60 years old, post stroke, run a 45 on tight pockets like it was easy as pie. He then just quit the run, did not miss to end it. He was a phenom, the world has not had anyone dominate pool like he did since.

Efren is great, but Mosconi was God. Here's my .02 worth:
Best all around player alive- Efren
2nd Best all around player alive- Nick Varner

hmmm...there seems to be fewer dissenters this time around....maybe they've gotten tired of this oft-asked question. or maybe, there's just no denying the man's skill and talent. everyone knows it, the top pros know it, now if only those with strong biases just look at it objectively then i'm sure they'll see the light.....efren's the best thing to happen to pool!

But then again.....has efren dominated men's pool as much as allison fisher has women's pool?

To me it's either Mike or Efren, Since I have seen Mike beat Efren a few times I'm going to say Mike Sigel is the best to ever play the game. Given the time to practice, Mike will beat anyone even now at any game, he is hands down a much harder competitor then Efren. Mike has intangibles that can't be measured, he can get at you by talking, and can rattle you and get to you before the first shot, He is just a fierce competitor.

But it's real hard to say anyone is better all around then Efren who may very well be the best to ever play pool, He is certainly the kindest pool player ever:D if he had more fire he would be unstoppable.

I would have to say it's going to be very interesting to see Mike and Efren in the new IPT tour, I'll go out on a limb and say the finals this December will be Mike vs Efren:D

What's really sad is that most casual pool fans have probably never even heard of him and/or couldn't identify him in a photo. Efren's an awesome player and great for the game, and the knowledgeable fans love him. But someone like Allison Fisher or Jeannette Lee is probably much more recognizable to the general public.

I think the largest bias in these debates stems from people unable to look past 20 years ago and the absense of footage of the old time greats like Mosconi or Greenleaf. Efren gains alot of the fanfare because he is current.

As to your question of whether he is as dominate in men's pool as Allison is in womens? Not a chance in hell. Mosconi was though. Then again 9-ball is not nearly the game that straight pool was in showing true skill and that has probably hurt Efren abit. Then again Sigel was alot more dominate on the mens tour then Efren has ever been, and Efren was around for a good chunk of Sigel's prime.
