..........CJ Wiley?

if anybody has seen cj wiley play they will agree with me that he was and is world class material. he is a busy business owner now but i know he has started back playing trying to get into the IPT. i remember years ago when all the top pros frequented cjs in dallas. he would match up 10-8 playing one pocket with cliff joyner and i remember another instance when efren spotted him two games on the wire in a race to either 15 or 13 playing 9ball for 10k. yup you guessed it efren won. anyways cj in his prime was prob the best american maybe second only to earl.

I particularly enjoyed the portion of Danny DiLiberto's book where C.J. is gambling with Danny in his pool room. Danny is winning and C.J. is getting mad. He said that C.J. started huffing and puffing saying over and over again, "I like pain....I like pain."

Danny replied, "That is good, because I like giving it."

Classic..........

The obvious choice is CJ Wiley. Does Sylver Ochoa live in the Dallas area? I know he's from Texas.

sylver is from mcallen in south texas. top player, might give those guys in dallas a good run for their money. i know he gave robert clark from dallas the last two and beat him. anyone who has seen robert play over the years know that he is no pushover.

I'm from San Antonio.......Maybe you might be a name to me......Oh and little al and cj would be the best around. joey too. I heard david g lives up there and if he does then he's in the top. So who exactly are u if you want to play some of these short stops?

Tony

dont get me wrong im not one of these top players. i love to match up. i dont mind losing if the game is right. i have played the likes of jon drew hager, with weight of course. hell i might jsut watch while im in dallas but if i move back like i hope to, sure enough i gonna match up with them. i was just wondering if the pool scene there was better or as good as i remember it. ive seen many a road player come to dallas and be broken by one of the many talents in the metroplex.

I expect that Chen (Jui Lung Chen) and David G are the best 9 ball players in the Dallas area right now.
John Drew doesn't play anymore, so Joey is probably the best one pocket player in the DFW area.
Lizard is in New Orleans, Robert Clark is still there and plays well, Billy plays at Clicks, and Robert Newkirk is still playing well and does exactly as he pleases as long as Paula approves.

When did David G move to Dallas?? I've seen him at clicks a few times, but thought it was just to specifically match up with someone.

I remember seeing CJ come into Miami with John from Indy in the 80s. John was setting up the game and CJ walked over to the Brunswick GC 1 at Pegs Pocket in Miami and rolled a ball towards the middle of the end rail, ending up with a ball nearly frozen. He picked up a house cue and cut the ball in. Tossed another ball out and again rolled it up towards the end rail, maybe 2" off the rail in the center and cut the ball the other way. He looked up and said to Strong Armed John..."Yep this table rolls ok". He then matched up with Tommy Brown for some amazing 9ball sets.

No info on whose the best in Dallas right now...just wanted to pass along a CJ story from his visit to Miami 20 years ago.

Hey David I remember that. He was waiting to play "Little Steve" some $10 eightball when he got off work. Wouldn't that have been funny!

I watched him play Toby for 4 digits in a pool room north of us. The next day CJ, John and CJ's g/f wondered in to our home room. He started to tell "Little Steve" how he was on vacation and liked to play $10 8-Ball. See, CJ had these really cool snake skinned boots on and the night before he had em off and he played in sox. Anyway...as he told Steve his tale I was laughing. HE looks at me and says "what are laughing at" I told him "funny, I saw you play Toby last night in Davie". Of course he says it wasnt him...thats when I told him "then your twin was wearing those boots". He gets hot and says "what are you, a detective?"

From there, the locals were treated to some jam up 9-Ball. CJ silenced the room with a table length cut {cue ball just off the Brunswick, 9-Ball just off the rail in front of the left ball counter} of a 9-Ball for the chedder that was seen by maybe 10-12 people...the next night Tom Brown shut him down and sent him on his way. JG, Uwate & myself were treated to some great pool in that room more than once:D

At the DCC he said that he had been living there but that he was now in south TX... McAllen I think... somewhere down in that area. Of course he's rarely there... last I heard, Jay Helfert played him some in CA and now I hear he's back playing in Dallas.

He said he doesn't gamble where he lives in S. TX...he goes on the road for that.

What ever happened to Roger Griffis?
The last time i saw roger he was living in dallas and frequented cjs alot. He was giving joey barnes (didnt find out till later who he was) the eight in 500-1000 dollar sets. Joey was running right through him. roger has been under medication for diabetes and even though he still plays like a monster his game has been affected by diabetes. no clue where he is nowadays.
