The best cues, hands down, are made by (INSERT ANY CUEMAKER NAME HERE).
"Hit" is very subjective and varies from person to person. For me, I'll play with a LAMBROS for the rest of my life. There's something about that Ultra Joint that makes the cue feel like a 1 piece cue. The feel (for me) is just amazing.
this is the best advice your going to get. Use what you like best, price has zero to do with anything.
what i did to determine which cue brought the best out in me was set up shots and shoot them 20-50 times with a cue and document if I made the OB and did I get the CB where I wanted it to be. I then used different cues shooting the EXACT same shot(s) and what ever cue I did best with is the cue I used as my daily player.
Its simple to do, set up 5-7 different shots, shoot it, write down the results and then shoot the same thing with a few different cues, you WILL see a pattern after some time and one cue will yield better results. No cue will make you a player, but a cue can bring the best out in you. to my surprise the cue that "felt" the best didnt get the best results.
You have to be instroke for this to work and IMO do it in a weeks time to keep other factors the same, preferably same day, table, etc 4-6 hours on a day when your playing good is the minimum. I started with about 8-9 cues and narrowed it down to 3 cues, then shot some shots 100 times to get enough misses to have good data. its a scientific approach to finding the right cue for a daily player.
I started with 2 Gus's, one Barry, a SW I used for 7 years, a Tad i used for 4 years, a Black Boar, Showman, 1 Bushka, a predator and 2 or 3 other cues. After some time I was down to my Tad I used for 4 years, Ray Martins Gus and the Boar. It was close but the winner was the Boar. The other Gus which i loved the feel of the best, didnt perform as well for me as I expected, I knew the Tad would as I used it forever. So my cue picked me, I didnt even buy it to use, I traded into it to flip, its on Cornerstone's site on the main page on the upper left-just the butt section is a permant part of Bills site.
It was a fun test to do, I did run the test again a year later and came up with about the same results. I have about 2000 hours on my Boar now, I havent played much in the past year. i'm going to start playing again and I'm going to do the test again. If the Boar wins I'll keep playing with it, if a different cue does better thats the cue i'll use-simple as that. I think everyone should try this, its fun and you mite learn a little too.
Dam I wish had some of them there fancy cues!!But I am just a poor soldier who has to make his cues, from whatever material is laying around like old broom sticks or old canes. Well maybe some day after I get a new set of teeth, I will be able to get one of those fancy shooting iron's!!
But seriously Eric I hope you are doing well. The last time we talked you were still having some pretty bad back problems that caused you a lot of pain. I have been out of the net for sometimes now, so it is good to see you posting again. I think the advice you gave above is right on target and I hope people pay attention to it.
Take care and again I hope you are well.
Cues are forever if you buy the right ones.
