Who makes the best shaft?

Where should I buy the best replacement shaft for my cue? I don't mean Predator or Searing or Szamboti. I mean an exceptional custom shaft that I could reliably get in a reasonable amount of time. Thanks.

I use Dan Trogdon for replacement shafts for our local players. He is reasonably priced and delivers his product in a timely manner. Thus far I have yet to see one warp. He is a very nice individual to deal with.

Thanks for the knock.

This is the first I've heard of it. You may have wanted to contact us or whomever you bought them from.

Warpage is not an issue to be concerned with in regards to Tiger "X" Shafts.

It doesn't seem he was knocking you, just saying what had happened to him and then says a couple of years later he bought... so maybe he will get with you and make his issue more clear to you. From where I sit you have been on the up and up and as demonstrated by your post as well. You are willing to "fix" what is broken. That is stand up in my book. IMO

word on the street is OB is coming out with an OB-2. I have no information about it other than I know it's coming.. something to consider.

I personally like my Z2 predator ALOT and I prefer it over an OB-1.

Tad Kohara.
Nuff said.

Joey -

Tad would make one for me because I have bought cues from him, but I got the impression having him make a shaft for something else, I'm not sure.

I usually have Rick Howard make my shafts for his and other cues and he is reasonable on price and delievery.

BUT, IMO there are tons of cue makers out there that could do just as good a job.

Ask for best shaftwood they have and dont be a nit about the price.

richard roundtree. the original is always the best. (although jackson wasn't THAT bad....)

I can make you a shaft to match just about any cue, any taper, tip, ferrule, diameter, length.......starting at $80. Turnaround time is about 3-4 weeks, at the moment.

My shaft start at $175.00 but are any size any taper and any connection. It will come with my new shaft coating that will never turn color and will stay slick as long as the coating is not removed. This includes a melamine ferrule and a Moori tip. 864-458-7662

I second that

Mike made me two kick ass shafts. The wait wasn't long, the wood was beautiful and it was tapered exactly the way I asked. He makes a great product.

There seems to be no concise answer on this issue. Maybe someone could post a survey with a list of good shaft/shaftwood makers and we could vote. Perhaps with would result in a more clear picture.

PM me and I'll give you the details. I was wrong in my original post, I still have one as it's the only shaft I have for 38 year old Viking that I have.

I like your ...

Craig,
I like your thinking!

1. What type of cue do you have?
2. What Pin is on your cue? What is the diameter of the cues butt?
3. What type of ring is needed - Custom or Solid color phenolic?
4. What length is required?
5. What weight is required for the shaft?

With out the above information no one can give you a price!!

Take Care

I simply do not know any cue or shaft makers. I am not too worried about price. I will say $500 for a shaft is a bit high, but I do understand supply and demand. The details should not be too hard to settle. A list and a vote is a very good idea. I am aware of variation in different shafts made by the same individual on the same butt. Yes, what constitutes a good shaft is somewhat subjective, but I'll go with good recommendations, i.e. a good reputation. Thanks.

That list of recommendations could be awful long. There are a lot of great builders out there. It you go tier 1 expect to pay an exorbitant price for the work.
Price isn't always an indication of quality.

I already recommended one maker, but this post says it all in regards to a LONGGGGGG list. The best thing is to find a cuemaker who's taper and work in general you love, then call him...Tom

You said it best. Find a maker then go with him. Jeff Olney has very good shaft wood. Call Jeff maybe he can help you out.

He cant go wrong with Olney.

Trogdons lead time was about 14 days last time I talked to him. He has shaft stock that is ready for final taper and turning. The stock is a decade old as I recall.
Of course I would check with him first to verify.

Kenny Murrell is also reasonably priced as well as Steve Klein. However the list can go on and on. Petree, Tucker, Haley etc etc.......

"Eddie Farris, best shaft maker in the world"! -Buddy Hall

According to Buddy Hall, Eddie Farris is the best in the worldwhen it comes to shafts and I can attest to that. I currently own two of his cues. He just recently made me a new shaft from some of the stock he got from Joel Weinstock. He admits that this is extremely desirable wood and the grain is nice and straight too. I had him make me a shaft with an ivory ferrule for my current player and it hits like the nuts.

Eddie is currently finishing up about 4 - 5 cues before Christmas. He normally doesn't do more than 20 cues per year. His cue is among the most sought after cues strictly for the playability. His 'old world' craftsmanship philosophy is something that is rare in this modern world of CNC.

For any of you who don't wanna take my word for it, call my home town pool hall (Magoo's) and ask for the house pro (Buddy Hall). He will tell you himself. 918.663.3364

I have no idea. However I noticed that Bryan Fisher is selling what looks to be exceptional shaftwood. So I would guess that he or his customers could probably hook you up. Of course the shaftwood he is selling today probably won't be ready for a year or more.

Jacoby makes and sells extra shafts for any make of cue. You should contact them and ask for what you want.
