I was practicing today at the pool hall (which opens at 3pm now:) ). Later a woman and her boyfriend walk in and take the table next to me. All of the sudden I hear this huge smack of a break. I look over next to me and it is the woman who just broke. She was about my height, 5'7, and skinny, but she had a tremendously powerful break. As time wore on she was hitting it harder and harder and the cue ball was beginning the to jump even though she was hitting from the center of the table with a level cue.

What was strange though was that her great break did not translate into an all around good game. I ended up concluding that she was about a C player or perhaps a B- player.

She did offer to play me a $50 set of 9 ball, but she would not accept the spot I offered, so I declined as I don't hustle pool, not these days anyways.

She did find a taker who ended beating her out of quite a bit of cash. I hope it wasn't discouraging experiance though. As inexperianced as she was I do think she is talented, at least from what I saw.

Anyways that was the highlight of my day at the pool room.

I'm still trying to figure out why women's break are so weak... generally. The less muscle I use, the more power I get. So what the hell?

P.S. You shoulda gotten a couple hundred and THEN exercise some compassion.

There's a little (literally, not figuratively) woman in So. Cal. named Jenny Lee (Rich Grenier's wife) who is maybe 5'2" and 100 lbs soaking wet and she's got just about a powerful break as any man. Incredible.

I can also vouch that Melissa Herndon has a great break. Better yet is her cueball control on the break. I'd actually rate her cue control better than most male pros off the break.

it's ALL about timing. most women move their bodies before their arm. i believe this is very obvious in jeanette's break,,,,i think(i don't watch the women too often).

now,,,,why their timing is off, i don't know. they don't snap the break either,,,,you know-like you snap a whip, so their break is kinda,,, "thuddy".

i think women should pass on that arm speed nonsense and just get a heavy cue with a massive metal joint and maybe with a billiard taper. that way they at least deliver a heavier cb.

Jasmin Oushan can break very hard.
I think many guys couldn't break so hard like she does.
Watch out for this lady i think she will become the best female on the planet

her reputation has preceded her since BEFORE her first visit here 4 years ago, when she was only 16

A few seasons back, we added a new female player to our league team. In her first match, it was obvious she had a break to match anyone in the room. One guy on my team who is about 6'4" and 250# and built like a linebacker even called out to her after her 3rd break "Michelle, can you teach me to break like a man?"!!! Everyone within earshot cracked up. Everyone on that team had a nickname...her's became "Hammer".

I think that the reason many of the women do not break as hard as the men is kinda like why the women golfers do not all hit the long ball....This is gonna sound bad, but here goes: Usually women that have larger breasts seem to have more trouble breaking hard, IMO. I think that it constricts their follow thru and timing (just like in golf). Now, obviously, there are women that have overcome this, but lets use Karen Corr for example. She is a great player, but really doesnt have a tremendously powerful break. Allison probably doesnt have a very powerful break b/c of her snooker background. But take for instance, Helena....she has a very powerful break and does not have very large breasts. Sorry if this offends anyone, it is JMO.

Sounds like Brandy again.

Women breakers

Nothing is more discouraging for a guy pool player playing a money set, and breaking hard and good, only to come up dry, and have a girl and someone else take a table close to you, and you watch the girl break,
at about 50-60% of your speed, and drop 3 balls on the break. It defies
logic sometimes ... lol , but it does help you think about technique and
a solid hit more, and that speed does not equate to balls made on the break. I have seen this many times, to me and many other guys... ROFL

I am not very tall physically, 5'7", so I had to learn to get my 'body weight'
into the break and follow through to get the power I wanted. Women breakers need to do the same thing. A woman's hips and thighs are her best friends when breaking. If they get their hips and thighs involved in
their break and follow through, they will break plenty hard enough.
Look at several of the the male Filapino players, Django, Alex, they
break good and powerful, but they are not big men by any means.

Judging how good a player's break can only really be determined by how well they break from the 'box' as a side break has more angle and you
get more action out of the object balls with less power. I jsut feel a more
straight on break is a better standard for rating a break.

Angela Paglia (sp?) Crushes the break too. The cue ball flys straight up into the air then stops dead about a foot in front of the spot. Cornerballs don't have a chance.

Anyone who says that women can not break hard, have not seen some of the women in the WPBA.
Although she is small in size, I will put the break of Sarah Rousey up against the break of most male pro players. She just crushes the balls.

After watching Sarah break, I wish I could say, "I break like a girl."

yep, i agree, some of them gals can really smash a rack of 9-Ball, no doubt about it. i noticed this the last couple of years at the WPBA event in Peoria. i'd say alot of them break harder than i do.

Someone earlier made a golf comparison to pool. I've never played golf except for a couple of times at the driving range. I'm a pretty strong guy especially from moving pool tables 6 days a week. But at the driving range I act like Happy Gilmore. I hit as hard as I can and can drive it lets say 200yards or less. Then some skinny yuppy who looks like a slight breeze woudl blow him off the planet comes in and smashes it 300yards or so. That or I have clubs my dad got when he first inlisted in the Air Force in 1972.

So I would say a lot to the break is technique. But from the golf comparison I heard someone explain to me why men are overall better in many sports than women.

Basically what I was told is that in golf. Though almost any woman who picks up a stick can play better than I. I have more potential being a man. Basically a woman pro will out do any man but never beat a decent pro-male. The reason being is the male has better hand eye cordination. And certain key muscles develope better. Muscles we can't see but use say in our forearm. Aparently this was developed from the hunter gatherer male of back in the day.

Yet men don't have the managing skills of a woman.

I've watched Helena Thornfeldt break. It's a sledgehammer break. Then of course I'm treated to Johnny Archer's break with is also a Sledgehammer. My breaks usually end up looking like a straight pool break.

I've been following Jasmin's progress for many years now, and if she continues to improve the way she has been, well let's just say it will only be a matter of time.

there's no follow through necessarily in the same manner as the golf swing. there are players who exagerrate their follow through, there are those who simply snap at the cb.

and they're not swinging their arm across their body anyway.

Sarah Rousey has one the best breaks, if not thee best break I have seen for a woman player. She is another one of the "I weigh 100 lbs. but break like linebacker" team.

On the WPBA, the two best breaks belong to Ga Young Kim and Tiffany Nelson.
