Who would you take on the road?

Bernie has the greatest stroke Ive ever seen. But he would need a money manager. He had a rough time in LA making games and getting moved on. A gentle giant but needs a lock artist for a partner. Which leads to another thought Road partners who are money smart. I take Weenie Beenie.

Problem he has is noone will gamble him but top pros. Even decent road players shy away from action with him. He had some seriously tight tables he was playing on stateside and he invited Kim Davenport to gamble straight up and Kim would not play him on those tables, told him to come to San Fran if I remeber correctly instead. It's tough to make a buck when you are stuck playing Jeremy Jones straight up one pocket because it is the only action you can get.

I saw Ramil Gallegos drill him in nine ball and Melissa Herndon and her boyfriend beat him playing scotch doubles getting the 7 from him. Also heard Jerry McWhorter the cue maker beat him here too.

If any of you are from the north east, you might know Andy Toth. In his prime he played with anyone. I've seen him play 80 no count 14.1, While he was teaching me one day, he ran 8 racks of 14.1 and I called the break ball he had to use for the next rack BEFORE he broke the rack open!. Also coming out of the same pool room, I'd take Pineapple because he always had the nuts, or did'nt play....Gerry

i would recommend gary abood and charlie brown as they are bot great players that are very knoledgeable of all the games.......and gary is fearless when hes playing one hole......and be careful about going to shreveport to play the bartender at tournament billiards....you might get a severe headache as that would be the infamous mr. abood.....

Is Gary the short kid with the big hair? I played doubles against him and his partner a while back, a couple of time-killing sets. I could tell he played solid, but he had an anchor on his ankle, and my man and I took it off. Anyway, a friend told a friend told me it was Abood (sp?), and you know how that goes.

hes about 5'8" and yes he will have a fro sometimes......didnt know he had a anklet......but i promise when the heat is on and the money is right ill bet on him anytime anywhere .....just have faith in him.....funny story to tell about gary in ring game if anyone wants to hear it.....just let me know......juston

Celtic...what are you talking about? I like Bernie, but I've seen him get smacked in several tournaments around Alberta. I don't think he can play at his old level anymore. How many surgerys has he had? If you're going to stick to local guys...how about Edwin Montel? Not many would recognize him.

Bar box : Stan Turango.

Any other game: Alex P.

there have been so many great road players that is hard to pick one but as far as pure hustling the suckers and getting the cash an old carney from shreveport named topsy was awful tough. he wasnt a world beater but he sure knew how to get the dough. i bet some oldtimers like $bill are familiar with topsy.

Edwin is alot more known then you seem to think he is. Why do you think he has to play someone like Keith McCready when in Vegas just to get action.

Plus when is the last time you saw anyone in Calgary trying to gamble with Bernie for big cash? If the money was there Bernie can still get back to his former self.

If you want to back Stan for afew thousand a set against Bernie in Bar Box 8-ball that can be arranged I am sure. Hell Dave Martin would own Stan for the cash. Stan might play well in tournaments but he is not exactly known as a strong gambler. Go on the road with Stan as your horse and you will have a long walk home.

Shortstroke, I just now read your post. Damn right I knew Topsy.
And, you are exactly right, he could lay it down with U.J., Bill Lawson and the best of them. Topsy could do anything. Carney, that's Topsy. Any carney game. Dice, cards, Monte. Don't get on the hood of a car and roll dice with him. The best that ever lived, Gene Goodman taught him that. Topsy probably won more money in the south than, get this, Scotty Townsend. The reason, topsy was never tempted to give the sucker his money back trying to give him the 5 and the break just to get the guys last $20.

Andrew St Jean, Charley Seaback, Ralph Greenleaf, Rudolph Walerone, Willie Hoppe. Charlie Peterson & Titanic Thomson, the dream 7 pack, you would make so much money you could buy downtown Las Vegas, that would be easy, during their time you could buy the entire friggin town for 10 grand, there was nobody there but injuns and a train station. Load up the roadster, make Charley drive, dump ralphs racoon fur coat in the trunk, Put a bag over Andrews head, duct tape fattys mouth and hit the road. oooga oooga....somebody give me some money, I could make a movie out of that which would put the hustler movie to shame. It would win a damn oscar for sure. I'll write it, no problem. :D

I'd have to go with a strong one pocket player, maybe Cliff Joyner and a realativly strong unknown 9 ball player whom I know VERY well who can beat almost anyone at any given time.

hilla......i used to live in sandiego....and played at hardtimes when it was open and then played alot at star billiards....also have been to college and watched some guys play......who all is still playing and by chance do you know if bernie wheat is still doing cue repair or if hes doin anything......and who all is playing out there right now......would like to talk to some of the guys i used to know and play with.......juston

Don Willis. If the stories are true he could squeeze all the cash out of any spot.

There are some people here in Derby City that wouldn't make it five miles without compulsively putting the whole 10 dimes in action. We might not make it to LA but we will have played for over a million :-)) by the time these guys are done. Unreal.

Which post are you replying to and to whom are you referring?

I saw Bernie M get drilled by our local bad boy Frankie K. I could tell Bernie was struggling, and he was giving up the last two to the second best player in town (Kim Davenport of course being the best). I also want to add that he turned down an even game with Kim at Championship Billiards, kept asking for the breaks. That all being said I would take my Filipino Gene on the road. That is IF he can still see the table! Marc Swisher

How is Gene man. Great guy. Lot of heart and the first Filipino of the pack. Props to him with a young lady to boot.

I haven't seen Gene in a few months. I am from Modesto and don't make it to San Francisco to play that often, I think the last time I saw him was at Hard Times in Sacramento. Yes he does have alot of heart and by now he looks so old that he gets action despite his reputation. I wouldn't try giving him too much though, some old dogs can bite right up to the end! MS
