One question: What kind of flooring?

He's willing to rip up the carpet, or worse, put a huge tile rectangle in the middle of it. So we're open to suggestions...

Leave carpet, it's fine... What I've done (so not to damage the carpet beneath) was place an 8"x8" piece of tile under each foot... (depending upon what size table feet would dictate size of tile)

now be a good wife and get him one! :grin-square:
 
Carpet for me. Have you ever heard a ball fly off the table and hit tile?? or even wood, hard wood flooring is expensive... a rouge cueball can not only mar up the flooring... it also does nothing to stop/slow the balls momentum bouncing towards glass door/tables/lamps,etc, etc...

Hmm. Didn't think of that.

I thought I read that you shouldn't put a table on carpet.

I think ya got that backwards, you always want carpet. It is usually commercial grade carpet cause ya don't want to be replacing it regularly. Plus you don't want to slip when leaning over the table. Tile floors tend to be slippery.

Reason I am asking....look on craigslist....I am seeing Gold Crowns on there alot here lately for around 750-1000....

Carpet is the way to go. Easy on the feet and also it's good for absorbing sound. Eliminates echo in the room too.

We bought a piece of carpet big enough for the table to sit on. Indoor-outdoor, low knap, easier to clean. The floor in the rec room in our new apartment is concrete, so carpet was a must, in my opinion.
What size table?

Well, may I say that antique tables can be nice to look at & even fun to play on. However I will say that because they are built different, with T-Bolts in the rails, they will play different. Banking can be different on the older tables, compared to a Gold Crown or Big Gandy commercial Pool Table
