I just noticed GSirca -greg sirca/ sirca cues- is banned. What did he do?

Also, Drivermaker and DCP are together. Lovely.

Anybody with a computer science background could create multiple identities and be back in a flash. Banning isn't the deterrent than everyone may think it is.

I would guess she got banned for the gif she had in all her posts. Putting that in there was just begging to get banned.

But it was funny as hell and a I applaud her for putting it there.

Well not in a flash I think as it seems to take a long time for the admins to approve people getting on board now. You right though, all that is needed is a different IP address.

Yes, a different IP address, a little computer science background, an inferiority complex with one's own life, and a general hated for fellow mankind. Voila, new identity and you can post whatever the hell you please, you know, not having to follow these God-awful hated moderated forum rules, the ones people love to hate but keep coming back for more.

IP address banning is sooooooo 90's and it doesn't work.. with modern computers all you have to do is unplug your router to get a new IP address..

there are better ways to track users.. and I'm not going to tell you anything about how they work :)

Do the routers reveal the geographic location of the posting party, or not really?

they can pinpoint you to a county but would need a warrent to track father than that.. they know who your ISP is for sure.

Your ip and other basic information tell you your rough location yes.

you've probably seen that little forum signature thing which shows what broswer you're using, your ip, your location and your isp - here's a link to it - i can't be bothered to work out how to insert it into this post!

Thanks, Softshot, to you and Worried Beef for the insight and information.

"we have ways to make you talk"

I remember that line from some war movie, lol. As mentioned in this thread, IP banning is not always effective, but sometimes it is, and for any troll not using a floating IP, banning their IP's, as a minimum is a time consuming pain in the butt. And not all IP's are changed simply by unplugging a router (static vs non...). And yes, you can also get an ISP (Internet Service Provider such as MSN, Yahoo, etc) to pull its service on users/abusers. A webmaster simply selects the offending person's postings (and how private is a private message?) from transcripts, and sends it to the ISP. Now a troll needs to go to another provider, which is fairly easy, albeit he/she loses anything associated with the old ISP (email account, etc, etc). If the above tactics don't work, and an incessant small minded crustacean continues to rein havoc, then a webmaster with knowledge or connections can rain hell upon someone's computer life. Hey, there are MANY other ways to make an offending person extremely uncomfortable. This knowledge is always a moving target, and some tactics may fall into the gray area... But I wouldn't feel entirely comfortable living life as a piss-ant behind a screen.

A very good site for SOME IP's is at http://www.geobytes.com. It will give you a % of certainty that the location is accurate. In many cases, it's spot on and indicates the IP position with a very detailed map. You can take it further from there and with some savvy you might be able to knock on someone's door. :slap:

I'm not giving out more info than is commonly thrown about on forums (and I am unaffiliated with management here). I am quite empathetic to AZB's position and I absolutely loathe short-sighted trolls. Life's too short! My entire reason for this post is to have people "think twice before picking up arms". You ain't as bad as you think you are as you hide behind your believed anominity, sitting there in your 5 day old skid-marked boxers, still sore from getting your a$$ handed to you 3 years ago by a 14 year old with a house cue, and taking offense to a post you mis-interpreted while inhaling a tube of glue. :bash:

Have a nice day and Cheers to AZB!
