Yep, I hope they don't come up with nicknames for baseball, football and basketball players, then everything would be out of balance too.![]()
Yeah, would really suck if we started calling people the "Iron Man", or ARod, or The Big Unit, or any of the names listed here http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_athletes_by_nickname
Players in various sports have been tagged with nicknames for as long as there has been sports, that won't change. Those players typically earned their name because of their performance, demeanor, appearance or it is a play on their name itself. I see no problem with the idea of nicknames, I have an issue with trying to give every swinging dick a nickname for the sake of giving them a nickname.
Some players embrace their nicknames as part of their persona, the ones that do not shouldn't be saddled with some stupid moniker they did not want, earn or deserve. There is a huge difference between nicknames in major televised sports and pool. Chris Berman labeled many unsuspecting players with names that stuck that they probably didn't want but it was part of the show, it was entertainment. Introducing a pool player by a silly nickname they don't like or recognize at a tournament is a different thing altogether IMO.
