It started out because of the whole "rec room" mentality. I live in Wisconsin so I don't see it here much but while I was in Marrietta GA I noticed quite a few houses with a hot tub and pool table. I think it has to deal with being a "luxury item".

I'd buy from them, it's not who sells it to me, it's all in who makes the table. If they are selling Brunswick tables fine, if they're selling "El Cheap-o" tables, I'll go elsewhere. I've already told the wife that if she gets a hot tub, I'm getting a table the same day.

Nice home appointments. I think mostly it is a business disiversifying to sell nice things to home owners in an attempt to stay in business. A few I've seen are good, and most I've seen don't know too much about pool tables.

Around here (upstate NY)they're called leasure centers & they sell swimming pools, hot tub and the associated supplies along with pool tables. Most of the table are low end.

When you invite a girl over to play pool, it's nice to have something else to do when she gets bored.

I have gotten a couple of reps from people with dirty minds. :)

As others have suggested. It is for diversification. The store I used to work at had pretty much different seasons if you will, where those items sold well. So in the summer, hot tubs sold big, but in the colder seasons, the pool tables kicked in. We also sold fireplaces as well so that made sure money was coming through all year around. Being that the store was in michigan, hot tub sales went to nearly nothing in the winter because you can't prepare ground or build a deck in 4 ft of snow :). The Small city I lived in had 5 dealers like this and all the name brand table manufacturers were covered. What you'll usually find in these stores is that there are salesman who have there own niches. We had guys that could care less about tables, and would just bs there way through presentations. Same with hot tubs and Fireplaces. You just hope you get the one that is into pool tables more so you are assured of some knowledge.

Similar market

Folks who have money to spend on a hot tub might have money to spend on a pool table. Complimentary seasons, too.

One place by my house has no clue about billiard equipment. I spoke to the manager. She was very nice, and seemed to be really trying, but admitted she did not know what to stock. I suggested she start reading this forum to get a sense of what pool players want.

Even the place that sells Brunswicks doesn't know much about pool in general.

Very few places in N.O. stock anything worthwhile. That's partly a function of the internet now. No tax, often free shipping, low overhead.

It is a seasonal thing. I live in Michigan. People use swimming pools in the summer and do outdoor things like golf, tennis, boating, and etc. In the winter time many go indoors. Leagues are formed for bowling, pool, darts, etc. In the winter time swimming pools don't sell very well so they started to sell pool tables, ping pong table, air hockey and etc. This was also good for Christmas sales. Then recently hot tubs came into the picture that can be sold and used year round.

If you notice most of these places carry low end cues and not the highest brand of tables.

I used to work selling Brunswick tables in Atlanta, Ga. As the only Brunswick dealer in north Ga, thankfully we never sold anything other than billiards stuff, with a couple of other game-room type things thrown in. After I moved, the only place where I live that sells pool tables also sells hot tubs. I refuse to work there for that reason(I agree that most sales guys at those places are akin to used car sleazeballs), and that the tables they sell are crap. I am sure some places that have hot tubs sell decent tables, but I have yet to see it.

leisure money to burn.... that's what they got in common. if a homeowner is looking to buy either one its cause they got leisure money to burn.

I dont know but I wish it wasnt like this. The only authorized Brunswick dealer around here also sells hot tubs. And they dont know much about either. Id much rather do business with a strictly pool table business. (I bought the table anyways, its still a Brunswick after all)

I agree with the others though that selling one or the other on its own isnt enough to get by on.

they need something to sell in the winter

this could just be the Minnesota in me coming out BUT...

most of us have outdoor hot tubs...

and we only use them in the winter...

the worlds best beer cozy is 6 inches of snow on the edge of the hot tub..

when your whole body is 100 degrees .. but the sweat on your forehead is starting to freeze..

honestl;y it's cooler than it sounds...

we never take the cover off if the grass is green...

why sit in a hot tub when you are already hot???
