Why Cant Jimmy Wych

Orcullo is pronounced, as a few have mentioned before, or-COOL-yo (short o, accent on the cool, which is kinda cool :P )

It's the Castillian accent (LOL, prisoner's Spanish lingua) ... err just a Southern Spain accent. Same way Bavaria pronounce -ich differently compare to the rest of Germany.

Forget about Reyes' last name, people aren't pronouncing his first name correctly.

It's not EFF-ren...it's EP-ren. ;) The Filipino language doesn't really have any "F" sound.

You gotta love it when native Filipinos interchange their "P" and "F" sounds when they speak English. My dad does this all the time. My brothers and I always get a kick out of anything he says with the word "pack" in it. Also, you gotta know that the "a" sound coming out of a Filipino sounds more like the "o" in cot.

Did you pack yet?

Did you pack it good?

Did you help your brother pack?

Lol...gets us rolling on the floor all the time.

That's funny. I forgot about that.:D

Has anyone else noticed when Allen Hopkins of all people calls him Efrem? I mean, he's known him for over 20 years and still can't pronounce his first name. C'mon Allen, I love you and all, but his name is EFREN, with an N!

Okay, I have to confess on here, since I'm knocking other commentators, there is one very well known name I have trouble with. Mika Immomen. I stumble on his name frequently. I usually fudge and just call him Mika all through the match.

I think, it's one of those cases that you over think, so the brain will keep sending you back the most recent sound you produced then it becomes a habit.

I sound it out in my head, and say it over and over when we are off the air. Then we when are in the match, I dog it again. And it's not really such a hard name to pronounce.

IMO MEN IMO MEN IMO MEN. See I can do it!

I can help you there, Jay! :D If is was "Immomen," it would be a tongue twister, but his name is "Immonen," with an n-e-n at the end. That may be a little easier to say. When in doubt, refer to him as "The Iceman from Finland" or "Mika" for short! :D

See, I even spell it wrong. Been taking lessons from Fatboy. :)

It was spelled this way in the current issue of P & B mag. Dummies!

IMO NEN IMO NEN IMO NEN That helps a lot.

It's one of the mysteries of the brain. You can say it correctly in your head (LOL, I do sound like Barry White in my head), but the brain actually remembers the sound that you uttered before.

Hmmm...I think your problem is Freudian.

Decoding and psycho-analyzing what you just typed, this is what it comes out to...

...In My Opinion Men, In My Opinion Men, In My Opinion Men...

Jay, do you have a crush on Mika? :D

YES, but please keep it quiet. I don't want my girlfriend to find out. :)

.

LOL!!! And you'd be correct for Efren's name for a good portion of the Filipinos.

Now if only we can properly explain to people on this board using phonetics how to pronounce Pagulayan.

I've always pronounces Alex's name Pag-u-lion....hence his nickname. I'm Canadian so I am probably butchering tons of names. For example, here we say his name as Alex "the Lion" Pagulayan eh. :D

Here is my only issue with commentators, besides the ones that love to argue on air, is Danny D constantly making the Kentucky comment when someone banks...we've heard it...we get it...stop. And lastly, Danny D's prononciation of the word "pocket". Please show me where the "a" sound comes from. He keeps calling it a "pa-kit". Rarr.

I'd like to hear some critique of my commentary from anyone who has heard me. I'm open to anything that will help me do a better job.

What I try to do in the booth is to have a normal conversation with the person next to me, just as if we are sitting in the stands and watching the match.

I try not to over commentate. Sometimes I think it is best to let the play do the talking. And I always try to throw in pertinent info, like what this match means in terms of dollars, postion etc. And who the winner will play next.

The more I can inform the viewer, the better job I'm doing is my feeling.

Maybe it's just term of endearment now that's why he's not changing. It's almost like , if you here "Efrem" in a crowded room that could only be Allen. Probably, Efren responses to it the same way.

I for one think Jim Wych is a great commentator. Nobody can deny his knowledge of the game.

Absolutely. Count my vote for Jim, I find his commentary informative and interesting without being condescending.

The one time I heard your commentary, Jay, I thought it was just fine. Matter of fact, maybe we should throw you and Jim together. A perfect team in my opinion.
