Why Cant Jimmy Wych

I like it when Sid Waddell says it, "Oh ee's completely snow-cawed on the three"

I sat right next to him in the booth for two years and never understood a thing he said. Now that was a challenge.

when he's doing commentary his voice starts out soft at the beggining of a sentence and slowly rises in volume and hits the crescendo and the end. It's pretty funny if you listen to it for a while

Reyes is pronounced like the word or name 'RAY' and then 'YES' with a slight pause between syllables. Now that aint too hard is it? ;)
You are correct on the pronouncation of Efren's name.
Also I believe that if Orcullo is a spanish name it should be pronounced Orcuyo. The double l is like a y. I maybe wrong. Who knows for sure?

Good point, dabarbr. We had that same discussion in Chicago 25 years ago about Ozzie Guillen. They may still be having it.

Like "or CUU yo", and not "or COOL yo".

At least he doesn't call him Efrem.

You better get used to it though...there'll be years of hearing Orcullo as "Or-cawl-o" or "Or-cola" as I heard this past weekend. It should be pronounced "Or-cool-yo" per those that know him. Worse yet, there is confusion as to how to even SPELL his name...is it Orcullo or Orcollo?

"Or-cool-yo" - It's a Castillian accent, Spanish Southerners, 'L' sound is pronounced then the 'Y' sound.
"Re-Yes" - As in Do-RE-mi, rolling the "R" sound

On the other hand, I think most people will probably pronounce Jay's last name incorrectly.

LMAO :D, that explains why you always sounded a bit lost, when you did some commentary with Sid, in Cardiff :) lol

I will say though, Sid is from around the Newcastle area of England and the accent in that area is a bit difficult to pick up on sometimes :)

Anytime the WPC is on, I always look forward to hearing yourself and Jerry Forsythe commentating, as you guys are simply the best pool commentators in the buisness, as well as Danny Diliberto :)

Okay Willie, I owe you dinner.

I finally figured out what to do with Sid. DON'T try to decipher what he was saying. Just look at the table, see what's going on, and when he stopped talking, I went right into a description of what was happening in the match. And it worked, the Director began to tell me "good job mate" at the end of my shift.

LMAO :D, I would like to think that the Director bought you guys a few beers as well :) lol, but in all fairness, Sid is a decent guy and is quite funny in his own way :), but yes, the "Geordie" accent is hard to pick up on sometimes and so, yes, concentrating on the match is about the best to do :)

No, if they had brought Jay a few beers he would have understood every word.

Maybe not, it may have been worse :p :D, oh well, only Jay could answer that one :)

Syd is a great guy. We even went out to dinner together. I still couldn't understand him.

I dont buy any accu stat tapes or dvds with JW listed as one of the commentators cause he sucks, if I never hear (that one wiped its feet) again I'll be happy. And I am happy Grady is supposed to be back in the booth with Billy Incardona this year.

Oh well, at least you gave plan "B" a try :) lol, but yes, Sid, is definitely a good guy, and yes, it does take a while to get used to the accent :)

In all fairness, Jimmy Wych is also good commentator, and I happily give credit where it's due :)

Another good Commentator as well, especially in the DCC, is Freddy The Beard :).... Freddy, if BCN/Accu-Stats don't have you back in the booth again for the next DCC, then I'm gonna have to have put a complaint in, as it's always good to have knowledgable commentary on all pool games that are televised, including Banks, One Pocket, Straight Pool, etc, and you're definitely right up there along with Jay, Jerry, Jimmy, Danny, etc :)

i think i'm ok on this one, i have alot of friends outside pool from the PI and I havent heard RAY-AZZ, hell if he saying it right then i'm wrong wont be the first time, but every single announcer he works with with pronunces like I do. I'M WATCHING HIM WITH 2 OTHER GUYS IN THE BOOTH ONE IS jAY AND some guy from england-sorry for caps.
As you scroll down through the answers, you'll see several people with the definitive answer, all of which are different. LOL!!! That's what I'm talking about. Problem is, the phonetics don't match up well with non-Spanish speaking people (or people who haven't studied language)

In Spanish (and other languages), the letter 'e' is pronounced somewhere between a 'short e' and a 'long a.' To most non-Spanish speaking people, and the majority of people who couldn't consider themselves having an "ear for language," they could hear it as either and wouldn't be incorrect. Similar to the words Carribean and New Orleans, most people have two distinct ways to "hear" these words, and the reality is that the pronunciation by the "natives" is somewhere in between.

Back to 'Reyes,' when the 'e' is next to a 'y', then it's going to naturally sound closer to a 'long a' since the 'y' is pronounced 'ee.' This creates a sort of dipthong, so, many teachers will just make it a rule to make 'ey' sound like a 'long a.'

The 'r' is slightly trilled generally. The 's' is an 's', not a 'z.'

And I pronounce Dennis' name ' or COOL yo ' also, but I have no idea how he pronounces it.

Syd Wadell makes even darts exciting! ;)

anyone know why he's stopped commentating pool?

Orcullo is pronounced, as a few have mentioned before, or-COOL-yo (short o, accent on the cool, which is kinda cool :P )

i'm not even going to attempt that name, yet, the LL is spanish is prounced like a Y but I still have problems with it,

in all honesty i opened a can of worms here and it was out of line, I cant spell and everyone seems to tollatate me around here and i sincerly appericate that, i have no business kncking how Wych says Efrens name, he should say Efren and I should learn to spell but I'll bet neither are gonna hapen, good day gentelmen.

I absolutely adore that guy.

It was several years ago, the first time I heard him on TV. We were surfing the program guide and stumbled across a pool match. I think it was the WPC, and his co-commentator was Jerry Forsyth at the time.

Usually, my room mate, who is a pool player himself, quickly leaves pool matches on American TV because they just don't seem to hold his interest, but when he heard this Syd guy, he was glued to the tube. We both enjoyed the matches more so because of the colorful commentary. With Forsyth's knowledge of the game and its players, to include his Southern drawl, and Syd's undeniable energy and excitement, they complemented each other. I really thought these were the best two, bar none, to commentate on pool. I wish Syd would come back.

So can we end the suspense, Fred? Is it safe to say the Fran Tarkenton/Tim McCarver of pool is all the way wrong on Efren? Should his name in fact be pronounced RAY-iss? Minus the trills that we Yanks have no hope of producing ... and would get punched out for anyway, lol.

And how about 'or COY yo' ... I hear that as much as anything.
