Why did you START playing?

the thing about pool players they were kinda different than other people.
Some of them didnt fit in anywhere else. We had our crew and nothing to do, of a night , friday at the pub where I lived on the dockside I would play with friends. My best friend was a player and he carried me around with him to pool comps for something to do. He could win. I played in lots and won some. I liked the individual challenge of it. Not dependent on any corporate directive. Just do your thing and its all up to you. Theres no teamwork and no one to blame and if you win, its your win.
Then she asked me to play in her pool team while hitting balls around. I was recognised as a good player by association. I mean that some of my friends were very capable on the green. And I was judged as their friend and must have talent too or something for them to be with me. They were my kinda people.
I liked the people who played competitively as teams. Memorable drinking sessions afterwards. Playing with a team in a league was interesting cause it meant I had to practise and it meant I was somebody if I won. Then I met all the players who play pool on another level. The purists in the pool hall just doing their thing without any competition motivation.
Then getting rewards. Cash, beer, tshirts. That was pretty good.
Its a pure form of hunting. I'll go with the hunting instinct.
I was going to say that I was hanging out with a black guy who would get me stoned to shoot pool with him. Then when we go to the white bars for him to win, I was his minder. But thats fiction.
I think I wanted to be good at something. And here was my chance.

Because I was dumb. I had no good direction then. Played pool because I found a family with everyone in the pool room and had a great boyfriend at the time that played and treated me very well. Not a great family mind you, just apart of something with all the drama and action. I just wished I had gone to school.

I bowled for over 20 years, at least 3 leagues a week plus tournaments. My buddy, who was on my team said a friend of his wanted to form a pool team. It was a bar 8 ball league...He was joining and they needed one more player. I said, no. I don't play pool....Besides, I was already going on 59 years old and figured to late to pick up a new thing.....
Finally I said yes because he said it was just a fun league.....Yeah, right. Forty teams in the league and every player kicking my butt and laughing and acting superior to me...
Being of a real competive nature, I decided to get better and learn the game. I took a few lessons from someone local and practiced 7 days a week. At least 2 to 4 hours a day and 6 to 8 hours on week ends...Needless to say I improved to the point where I finished in the top 10 in that league with over 200 players....That was in 1999 and I have since quit bowling and do nothing but play pool.....
I love pool and wish I had started at a younger age. I am still looking for lessons and trying to get better. I am 66 now and have to cram as much in as I can while I am still able to play. If I live to be in my eighty's, you will still see me in Vegas at BCA every year......Just can't quit playing.....Love the game....

I was a junior in college, and my friend's brother played quite a bit. I started hanging out in the student union poolroom, and it was quite a fun distraction from studying. It was also much better than going to class...
i started to play pool at the age of 15 or 16 in Trenton,Ontario,Canada at a place called minzos when my brother taught me how to play, shure i lost some games until i met one of my co workers at the arcade and got into a game of pool and i won the game.I was always at pooltables at bingo halls and pubs until i met a person and started to beet him almost every game, and other people and now i am in the league here in Edmonton,Alberta and i lose some and win some but i ol always love the game of pool.

Most of us here on the forum either enjoy, love or are addicted to the game, but your originating interest was stirred How? For me it was a combination of my first 'easy' score, not much mind you but to me at the time it was a good feeling, plus I could escape from all the BS at home when growing up. Now as I have aged reigniting that interest seems to be my most difficult task, how about you?

When I was 13, my friends spent some times at this local youth club, one of these city-funded places you could hang around with friends instead of making trouble in the city drinking and fighting. They invited me with them and there was a small 6' pool table and eventually I started playing and was hooked ever since. That was 16 years ago.... sigh...
