Why do bangers think they deserve a shot at the table?

I'm sorry but your not going to like what I am going to say.

Like someone has already said, they know exactly what you are doing, getting free practice time at their expense. That basically makes you a scrounger.

It doesn't make you 'amazing' that you can beat the average Joe. 90% of these players cue so badly that if they make any shot other than a duck, its a fluke. Do you want me to give you a clap?

These are just players that want to have a beer and shooting pool is nothing but a fun social game. They don't have aspirations to play pool at a very high level. You probably mistake it for envy and that they just can't handle being beaten. No that is not the case, they feel pissed (and rightfully so) that your being a killjoy, spoiling the fun, hogging the table, taking their money and feeding your ego at their expense.

I've actually come to despise people like yourself. People that do have a genuine interest but then put other people down like they are deficient, and not as talented. Playing pool for most people is not high on the list of life priorities. Clap, clap, bravo...

They deserve to play on those tables a lot more than you do. That is why bars have pool tables, to attract customers who pay for drinks. Your taking away that attraction away from them during peak time. Lets say that three people didn't come to the bar that night because they decided to go somewhere else that had a pool table. The bar is going to lose money because of you.

If you want to play pool at a more serious level then compete or get a practice partner and go to a pool hall. I would be totally behind you if it was a proper outlet and people sharked you.

Personally for me, I want tough competition. I want to play players that give me a challenge.. obviously you don't and are the type of person that just wants to feel like he's amazing because he can beat a few intoxicated people that can't cue straight.

Good post and very well thought out. I can see where you are coming from with your opinion. I disagree with some parts though, but that's just my opinion.

I'm sure a lot of us have went to the bar, put a dollar in the table and got their turn and played for most of the night on just that dollar and I'm sure they had a good time doing it. I wouldnt go so far as to call them a scrounger though.

When I play at a bar I'm not taking it serious. Im playing off the fire and firing at everything (since bar rules 8ball makes you do that anyway). Sure my position and shot making is gonna be better then Joe Bangers but that's not saying they are not gonna have a good time either. 99 percent of the racks they are going to get 1 or 2 hots and run some balls too since I'm not really trying as hard nor taking it serious.

One thing I have notcied though on the rare occasion that I do this is that a crowd will form and a line starts to get bigger, the ones you played want to play again. I think because I'm being so friendly with them as well and making jokes with them (not at them) and the other on lookers.

It's a guilty pleasure. It's fun. I cant do that shit all the time though, that would be just being an ass. It's rare that I actually go out to a bar and normally if I do it's to get shitfaced. It's even more rare that I get on the barbox and play the randoms, but if I do, I do what I can to make it fun for everyone and provide a level of entertainment as well.

Sure someone might get all butt-hurt over the situation at the bar, but part of being a pool player is being a "student of human moves" (to quote Fast Eddie). You should be able to spot this person a mile away and no to steer clear. You are in their environment and techincally they have a right to be pissed. They want you to get off the table and you think it might cause an issue, then oblige them. A pool table at a bar shouldnt have been your reason to go there anyway, it's normally just something to do while you are there.

To sum up... I say go to the bar for the bar... if they have a pool table, go have fun. Be friendly, entertaining, watchful, mindful. If you think things are gonna get ugly, throw the match. Makes the guy you played look like a hero at the same time. It's ok to showcase your talent on occasion because you should know that your opponent would more then likely be happy to kick your ass in Golden Tee that he pumps quarters into every night there. :grin-square:

When I'm at the bar playing some bar box 8ball, I'm trying to break and run everytime. Although it doesn't happen as often as I'd like, I always here people complaining that they don't get to shoot? ;) Isn't that the point of the game, to pocket all of your balls in the least amout of innings? In the last few weeks I've been sharked a few times when I was about to run out. I understand that they put 75 cents in the table, but don't they understand what I'm trying to do? (don't talk to me when I'm shooting) :outtahere: I know what your all gonna say that I should just go to the pool hall and play some real players, but I like to go to the bar on Friday...

imo you're supposed to lay down for those games. don't go all out to look helpless but don't show nothing really.

you might end up in a cheap game or get your bar tab paid if you do it right!

^That too... who knows what you could run into... might even come across another pool player and pay for their tab

Good stuff.

I love playing BarBox 8, I go at least twice a week. Im pretty good, but not really at the level of being able to run a rack of 8-ball yet. :) I don't win every game I play. There is a crowd of "regulars" that are there playing pool all the time, and most of them are good players, and I enjoy playing with them, and consider them friends. I know what nights I can go and play pool where they will be there. They don't drink that much, if at all. Of course once in a while a random "banger" will put his name on he board, but thats fine. Have fun with them, I miss enough shots that they get a chance, the only thing that really gets on my nerves is when they take 5 minutes between shots. Most of the time we play doubles anyway so that helps more people get time at the table.

At the end of the day your playing pool in a Bar, just have fun, and don't take it to seriously. I still try to play the best game I can, but if I miss or loose some games oh well, it's only $1 a game.

And now let this thread die, I seem to kill any thread I reply to :)

That's how I learned the game when I was 17. Pay, loose, learn. I snuck into the bar at happy-hour when they weren't checking IDs and I'd play the boxes for a few hours. When the party really got going, I knew I stuck out too much- not drinking. As I got better, I owned the table and some guys wanted to play for beers but I couldn't buy and didn't want to get in trouble. hah. By the time a normal pool hall opened up, I was there 4-5 days a week.

How would you fell playing the BEST BAR PLAYER in the world, and all you got to do was PAY, RACK, & Watch??[/I][/B][/QUOTE]

If you like to beat up on bangers and then gloat over your conqests... you must be a banger.

If there are no open tables then common etiquette dictates that EVERYONE deserves a shot at the table. Common courtesy.

Some of the most fun I've had playing pool is barbox 8ball, partners, playing for $5 or a beer a stick.....grab a house cue, use an open bridge, natural positions, and just have fun.....you meet some nice people, and if you joke around and avoid running the table, most people will chat you up and donate most of the night....you don't even have to dump - just play aggresive, go for every shot, bank, whatever....keep it light....

If you keep beating the same guy over and over, just buy the next round, be friendly, keep him laughing, and tell him that you are really shooting good tonight....for cheap stakes, most partner games are fun and relaxed...sometimes you will run into some really good players, and then it gets really fun....

when I play bar pool

I put in my 75 cents / dollar.
I rack
Banger breaks- now depending on what happens after determines how strong or weak I play.

If he sinks a couple, on my turn I'll shoot till we have the same number of balls till the 8. - give him/her the chance to win the game

If he/she goes on a run and misses the last ball before the 8, Im gonna attempt to run out.

If he/she breaks and scratches, nothing goes in, or misses the second ball, Im going to attempt to run out.

But my personal rule is if I go on a 5 ball run and win, Im offerring to buy the banger a beer. I think is good sportsmanship and ensures goodwill the next time you visit that bar.

I usually practice difficult cuts, an tougher run outs.but most the time I just have fun.
I am a banger,with a few skills...

To the OP, are you that guy that goes to the bar with his cue and case? I dont mean the pool hall, or the nice bar with a lot of pool tables, but you know, the bar that has 1 barbox thats in bad shape. You bring your cues with you? I shake my head at these guys.

a way of life

money for nuthin' and your chics for free! With the bangers, always be buying the beers. For their girls too!

When I was a young beach bum in so.cal. I'd wake up with a hangover , search the couch and chairs for any change. Get three quarters together . Go to Doc's Bar On Highland in Manhattan Beach . Buy a 25 cent draft..
Challenge the table with a quarter. Bet a draft. Keep a quarter just in case I lost. Most of the time I was fixed for the rest of the day. It is the bangers' fault that I became a drunk. But it was fun.
