Why do people in the pool hall come up to you and want to play you but want weight?

Meaning, you are in the pool hall and someone walks up to you and says I want to play you, but I need the 7 and out, playing 9 ball. Or walk up to you and say I want to play you some One Pocket, but I need 13/5? If I ask for a game from a pool player I do not ask for weight! Now on the other hand if I ask you to play me then I can understand you asking for weight. You did not come to me to ask to play me. My point here is if I ask you to play me, I don't think I need or want any weight. What happen to playing even? At least until you find out how the match goes! Then perhaps you can adjust the game.

I agree. If you are asking to gamble, you shouldn't ask for weight. At the same time, if you are asking to gamble and the person is asking the last 5 balls on a 9 ball game, you shouldn't be mad or ridicule the guy because he didn't ask you to gamble. He just wanted to hangout with his friends and you interrupted his fun. So if you accept, play him his terms, if not, say "I can't do that but thank you" and gracefully leave. At the end of the day, it is a gentleman's game. I hate hustlers come right in the middle of my fun with my friends while I am playing pool and getting drunk asking to gamble and get mad when I ask the last five. Clearly I am drunk and hanging out with friends but I also don't want to say no to free money. So don't get mad, just leave gracefully.

All I ever played was even. It seems that most of the talk I see is about weight though.

I like how you think.

Good post - I agree completely! I always wonder why people will do that, especially when they've been watching you play for who-knows-how-long and have a good idea of your speed (I always assume that they think they could beat you by giving you the spot they're asking for).

Assuming you don't know this person, why on earth would they think someone would give them weight without ever having seen them play?

The only way I can even imagine entertaining a request such as this would be if the two of you were first, friends and second, played with some frequency. This would mean that both of you likely know how things would turn out when playing straight up. It is of course done pretty regularly with weekly foursomes on the golf course. Then again, there is usually a neutral body that monitors handicaps and strokes are given accordingly.

Mr. Lock,

Before yesterday, I might have walked into Buffalo's and asked you for a game, even up. But.... after seeing your 'Truck' interview I would now want the 2 & the break & you shoot one handed, behind your back, AND only for $5.00.

Your reputation preceeds you, Sir. You may have to go to GUAM to get a game even up.

I hope to get over to Buf's soon. Don't get your hopes up. It will only be to say Hi, and shake your hand. Maybe listen to a story or two or WATCH you shoot a bit.

On second thought, I will play you any game you want EVEN, for as long as you want. The only requirement I have is that after all is said & done we come out 'even'.

Have a good day. I had a bad one yesterday.

Best Regards,

Hello Mr. English,
I thank you for your kind words. I hope to meet you soon! I am sorry about your bad day yesterday. Do you care to talk about it? Even, huh? Thanks again.
Many Regards,

Talk about what? Did I have a bad day? Did I say I had a bad day? What are you talking about? I didn't even play yesterday.

I dunno...if you play well then folks need weight, period.

How would you suggest one who has no chance to win get in action with you?

Certainly you aren't going to say Mr 13-5 should play you even?

Hello Black-Balled,
You bring up an interesting question. I would just avoid this person. If he needs that kind of weight he needs to improve his game a bit! Not you lower your level of play with a big spot. I saw Scott frost give up 17/4 and win. In Buffalo Billiards, a several months ago. Two weeks ago Justin Hall gave up 10/2 and won. At Buffalo Billiards.

Exactly...and what kind of action do you think those 2 bullies would get if they approached the situation with the 'even or nothin' attitude?

Nobody gonna tell you what to do in a poolroom, but for me,skill level isn't really a deterrant to matching up.

This concept cracks me up. We all know how all this works. If you don't, better brush up on it before you get around those that do.

You are right. If you like to play pool and gamble you will match up. I just hate for a person to ask to play me and want weight when they are the one asking me to play. If I had to ask for weight I would not ask to play the person giving up the weight.

If someone knows you will gamble, but knows they can't beat you even, why can't they ask for weight? Is the new unwritten rule in pool that only the stronger player is allowed to initiate the conversation?

Mr. Lock,

That is bacause you are a very 'giving' person.

If my own Mother asked me to play, I'd ask her, 'what you gonna give me?'

Then she'd proabably say, 'nothing but a real ass whipping if you don't rack the balls'.

And then I'd say, 'Okay, let's play, but you rack... you asked me to play'.

Best to you & I hope you get a 'fair' game,
