Why do pool halls take a green fee?

If you hold a tournament at their establishment, you are bringing them business. They will serve a tonne of alcohol and food in what would otherwise be an empty place. Some of them around here take 50% of the purse??? It's ridiculous. If anything the organizer of the tournament shouldn't pay any green fees at all, plus get a cut of the food and beverage sales as well.

Sometimes green fees pay the tourn. director. Also, the p'hall may have added money to event. As for the "ton of food and alcohol"? How many tournaments have you been to? That's not always the case.

Serious pool players will NOT spend much money on alcohol.... They stay focused on pool.... So the pool hall owner has to make money some how.....

Days

The tournaments coincide with the rooms busiest days Fri.- Sun. The Green Fees helps to pay the rent.

And in my experience, the room owners will often support action, by putting locals in the box with road warriors.

I say let the owner feel it has been a lucrative deal to support the tourneys.

Some pool rooms even add money to the pot. Some match the pot in added money (like if the tournament gets 20 players at $10 each, then the pool hall would add $200 to the pot).

There is one here in Greensboro that takes a $10 green fee per player, and does not add any money to the pot.

I think if you go to TN for example, then you will see mostly added money tournaments.

In Australia most of the pool players are bums and will drink free water and bite their nails :-) so green fees are a must.
