Why doesn't someone have this as a business?

It'd be a labor of love for sure.
Buy used table for under a grand?
Change cushions and maybe subrails? Re-paint and re-chrome corners ?
Re-cloth and deliver for $3-4K.

Hauling labor, storing labor and cost ?
Might as well make coffee at Starbucks. :D

If starbucks pays that well I will definatly look into working there. I am not going to go into what the costs are but I assure you the profit is good.

Gold Crown Refurbishing

Anyone who is already in the pool table business can pick up a used table and make a few bucks by flipping it. No problem. However, their established business is subsidizing the flip.

The original poster wanted to create a stand alone refurbishing business from scratch. His plan was to hire several guys and perform the work in a sort of assembly line process.

That just won't work.

If you can pick them up...Haul them...move them...warehouse them... repair them... deliver and set them up for givaway price.......... I say do it:confused:

The idea is a good one. I know Jay does this aswell as Dave from Boston. They buy up pool rooms and recondition the tables and sell them. Myself, Bob DeTurk and John Burns have been doing it for about 2 years now. We currently have 40 Gold Crown 1, 2, 3's in stock. We sell to homes and commercial accounts.

Thanks for the response.

What's your buying and selling range, geographically? Ever think about loading a truck for storage in a small storage unit around a big sunbelt city?

When you say "recondition", what do you do with the table components that need more expensive work? Just buying a set of cushions is $200-$350. Do you rebuild rails, or replace them? I don't ask for proprietary details, just a general idea of what you do.

You can make a profit when you sell the table. The issue these days with 9 ft commercial tables is the buying market is very soft. virtually no new pool rooms opening, Craigslist selling GC 1,2,and 3 for under $1000.00 on a daily basis.

The acquisition cost is down but the resale time is way up. I've been doing this type of business for many years, trust me it's no cakewalk but no aspect of the billiard business is these days.

I wish I could find a GC around here, for under $1000. They all seem to be hovering at the $2000 mark. But they aren't selling very fast, either.

Which proves working at Starbucks pays more.
At least you get your $6 an hour paid every pay check and you get free coffee.
I saw an Anniversary for $750 on Craigslist last year.:yikes:
I told my brother to buy it. He didn't.

Banger,

From my friends down in your area, word is, the Texas and Louisiana economy
is still pretty strong. Pool rooms are doing fairly well. As long as this holds, Gold crown prices will stay at fair ($1200-$2000) prices. On the east coast, pool rooms have been dropping like flies, flooding the market with used tables.

I did better when I was paying $1200-$1500 for used Gold Crowns and selling them quickly to pool rooms for $2500.00 delivered and installed with new cloth. Now it takes me months to sell the same 10-12 tables one at a time to home owners.
