Why fill the low deflection with foam?

Why do makers fill the front end of a low deflection shaft with things like foam?

I have a 6 spliced partial shaft that is in raw form. Am considering having it the first few inches drilled out..maybe not a full 5/16 but a little less.

I'd like to know why cue makers use foam to fill in the hole?

What can I used to do the same? What if I don't fill the hole? What are the chances of warping?

The tip size will be 12.25mm - 12.40mm

Not looking to make shafts to sell..Just for my own personal use.
 
Usually it is to prevent dirt or stuff from getting in the hole. The foam on Predator is only about 1/8"to 1/4".
 
It's to keep the excess glue from gluing on the ferrule from getting into the hole and rattling around.

other options

you might fill the hole with bamboo, hollow plastic tube, or balsa wood.

Ferrule at 12.25mm is .482". Hole at 5/16" = .312. .482 - .312 = .170 total tenon size. Divide by 2 = .085 tenon wall thickness. Now add a ferrule. Good luck.

Just brainstorming you could load it up with Gorilla glue and let it foam out. You would not have to fill it. I would do a test piece no matter what you do. Another way that I used to do on jump cues was to core them out to lose weight and fill them with something called

thanks for the suggestion everyone. I'll find an appropriate gun drill bit size and test the various foam/ filling type of material to see how much the actual weight is per inch. and see how much lighter it is compared to wood.

If i filled it with Balsa wood. I'd still have to use glue to keep the core material in place and the additional adhesive adds weight.

In my opinion:
#1 - Give some structural support, as some is much better than none especially in a hollow shaft.
#2 - will absorb any weird noise from hollow shaft, and more importantly,
#3 - will absorb actual vibrations in the shaft, from hitting the cueball, which results in less deflection. Depending on the hit, certain resonating frequencies are set in motion that can cause the shaft or cueball to react in a certain way. Using a foam component designed to dampen those certain frequecies can reduce the effect and produce a more pure/straight hit without resonating frequecies interfering and deflecting.
Just my thoughts.

4. It works better with CTE.
 
Tiger uses balsa wood to fill the inside and the hit is really solid. Something to think about. Tiger doesn't have that soft hollow feeling. Pretty sure ob classic is similar but haven't tried one.
