yes i did clap my hands and say ewww a poker player as he passed but its nothing to do with poker it has to do with josh.i watched him in a tourney on tv and he was rude and arrogant and the commentaters mentioned it that he had bad table manners.now what many dont know is that years before josh was a pool player and still is and thats great but i saw him get knocked out by that big guy who wears the funny glasses with eyes on them and he was very polite and really said nothing but when josh lost another player at the table shook his hand and josh leaned in and said bust this mother$#@#$@. also he said hes never said anything to me not true he asked me in atlanta 6 months or so ago what was i going to give him to gamble at pool and i said i would rather play the local hero stevie moore . so in a nutshell i have no problem with poker player as i know and like many of them i just think josh is arrogant and disrepectful of other players which if its poker or pool i cant stand watching that.i think josh should be thankful that poker requires a small amount of skill and a lot of luck and a big mouth to succed he should fit in just fine

Myself and a few others including John Hager and Chris Bartrum, lost $3500 to Josh a few years back. I was getting a pretty decent spot shooting 3 pointers against a kid named WOO whom Josh was backing. Having played college basketball and leading our conference in 3 point %, I felt confident. This kid WOO stood about 5 feet tall. I made 67 of 100 and didnt even get close. I think he made like 78 or 79. Josh was a complete gentleman the entire time and even gave me a ride back to Mr. Cues from the run and shoot. I agree that he comes off arrogant, but so do a lot of people that are the least bit good or confident in themselves. I've been called arrogant a million times probably and I'm sure you have too John. My point is this, I think your comment was uncalled for and I commend Josh for not saying something at the tournament. If it would have been me, I would have slammed you against the wall.

seems like u have to explain yourself alot????
Twice is alot? Once was because someone else brought up his name in an old story that attacks his character and the 2nd time was because someone else mentioned something he did and he again wanted to make sure people knew the truth. There are a lot of guys out there trying to make a name for themselves and working on sponsorship (esp with the IPT going on). There are times that they're going to have to defend themselves. I don't think twice is a lot.

TBA, FWIW Josh DID say something at the tournament. Go back and re-read the blog. While neither Josh nor John are saints, I didn't recall seeing either one of them stoop so low as to threaten physical violence.

hey john
i remember in one of your posts a while back and i quote you...I WILL PLAY ANYONE WITH A NEW YORK DRIVERS LICENSE FOR WHAT EVER THEY WANT...

I have never threatened anyone on here. I simply said that it wouldn't have flown if I were Josh. I have replied to John's PM for all of your information and cleared any misunderstandings. The fact is, I could care less what goes on between John and Josh. I was just defending Josh because the only time I've had dealings with him he was ok even though I lost which doesnt happen often.

John has a whopping 4 posts and that "quote" is not in any of them. If you're really a "billiardspro" are you going to tell me that you've never said anything cocky while trying to woof up a game? LMAO, I've heard players say things MUCH worse and cockier than that. There's a fine line between confidence and cockiness.... when it comes time to match up that line fades but it has to. One must believe in themselves and their ability when matching up. Once you reach the level of the pro calibur players, pool is a mental game from there on out. I've yet to see a pool player that wasn't cocky to a degree... they have to be.

John,
You don't have to defend your actions here! What happened was nothing in the grand scheme of things and certainly nothing important at a pool tournament. You probably don't know me from Adam, but I've been a face in the crowd at many of your matches. I've never seen you do anything that I would consider out of line!
I really enjoyed your straight pool run at the Derby this year. I'm still at a loss of words regarding that combo you shot on the 10 ball! Either I missed something or that was one of the greatest straight pool shots I've ever seen!
If you're ever passing through Cincinnati, give me a call and stop by my shop. I'd like to discuss adding you to my player rep staff.

just more hot air!

Sherm ... You know you can't leave us hanging. You brought it up about
the combo, so can you draw us a picture (WEI table) of the shot?

Poker players, or studio wrestlers?

I've never met Arieh. He might be the nicest guy in the world. I have seen him in televised poker tournaments where I thought he behaved like a rude, obnoxious poor sport. As a matter of fact, modern poker events seem to allow almost any type of rowdy or harassing behavior: jumping up and screaming when they get a favorable card, chiding and bothering their opponents, etc. Some of their actions would be more suitable in a WWF wrestling match.

I have seen Schmidt play many times. I've never once seen him get out of line with an opponent. I've never even seen him do any woofing. He's a tempermental player, but he doesn't harass. Poker players make Earl or Basavitch seem like choir boys.

John Schmidt is a class act

:D I haven't had the pleasure of meeting Josh but I have played against and on the same team with John Schmidt and I can tell all of you JOhn is a class act, a fierce competitor, and a super nice guy who happens to be one of the greats in a sport that at present does not reward it's great players like most other sports. Hopefully the IPT will change all that, but please, let's all refrain from any negative comments about John Schmidt, he's a winner in every sense of the word. :D :p :D

Find this WOO kid, I got someone to shoot 3 pointers with him.

Arrogant or Ingenius?

i've known josh for about 10 yrs now. he has ALWAYS had alot of gamble and willing to bark up a good game of pool or poker. the funny thing that no one realizes is that 3 yrs ago hardly anyone even knew who josh was. he's had a world series of poker bracelet for quite a while now (and won another this past WSOP) . but, after "his performance" on tv, not only did he win $2.5 million he also landed a sponsorship with bodog.com where he has his own table named after him. now everyone knows who he is. sounds like he promoted himself pretty well to me. just to show you what i mean....who got fourth in the WSOP the year josh got third (the year everyone saw on tv)? the answer: well...this person is an icon in the poker world and you couldnt think of the answer b/c he is so low key....dan harrington.

John,

What you have seen on tv was over a year ago, when Josh got out of line with Greg Raymer at the 2004 WSOP. Josh has apologised to Greg (soon after the confontation) and Josh and Greg are now friends. You are just taking a moment out of context and assuming thats how he is all of the time.

Josh is a stand up guy and has emitted his mistake and has publicly apologised on tv for his actions. He is a person who has bettered himself. You should apologise on this forum and send a personal pm to Josh apologising to Josh...

Man, when will people understand that everything is not to be taken so literally? People try to make games, plant seeds, etc. etc. .......that's how matching up works. Are they that way when they ACTUALLY play? Of course not since that's disrespectful.

But it is natural for people to bark (or else why would they call it barking?) and try to get under someone's skin to get them out of their comfort zone to make bad decisions. This is how the game (life, not pool) is played, like it or not. It's like someone going to the flea market or pawn shop and haggling over a price, how natural is that?

Lighten up people, let's not make mountains out of mole hills just because these people have a name for themselves and have something to lose.

I do not watch poker and I do not know who Mr.Josh is and I do not have a comment on him.
But I do know who John schmidt is.While at the pool table he conducts himself in a dignified manner and while hanging around the tournament site he is very sociable and friendly.I never saw him behaving in a indecent manner during my visits to the tournament sites.

schmidt sounds jealous and hateful.

what a terrible way to go through life.

i feel sorry for him, no matter how good he plays.

Must weigh in

While I don't know Josh, I have seen John at many a DCC and he has always been a true sportsman. As a matter of fact, he has provided some of the best side action I've seen (anyone remember the match against Tony Watson). Is there "barking" in the pool world, of course. That's part of the deal. But it doesn't make a man bad.

At this year's DCC, my 11 year old daughter and I had the chance to meet John while he was at the tournament office. He not only gave her an autograph, but he also took the time to take a picture with her (and he was dressed in a suit). It's one of her favorite pics from the DCC. Thank you John. You are a true sportsman in my book.

John and Josh

I have seen John play pool many times and I've seen Josh play poker many times. To be confident is one thing and to be rude and disrespectful is another and a choice. John choses to conduct himself "Efren like" and it appears that Josh models himself "Phil Helmuth like". Nuf said.
