The Canadian Championships are coming up. We have 8ball,9ball,10ball and snooker. For men, woman, juniors, and amateurs . U make cash, get a RING, get to represent your country at the worlds. Its a title that nobody can ever take away from you. Why not in the U.S. ?

Great question and I'm going to attempt a semi-logical answer.
I think the US has so many big events and titles that by the end of the
year we know who the top players are.In Canada there's barely any high
quality events. So the Canadian Championship on paper is the biggest event of the year, even though the turnout numbers have gone down. They just seem to take pool more serious in the US.

Thanks for a great answer Scotty. I took most of that into consideration when posting. But I think this would appeal mostly to amateurs as they dont get many chances to be a champion of their country. Bet they would get a great turnout.

For the amateurs and J.R's
for sure.I think your right about the turnout,if it was marketed properly,
they would have a massive event.

Question are the championships your talking about straight up or are you talking HDCP, 8Ball, 9Ball, and 10Ball?

I would think you are speaking of non-HDCP events if the winner would represent the country in the worlds.

Why I ask is because I really don't see a lot of people in the U.S. if they has a similar tournament signing up if they had to play even, I think that is unfortunate, but true.

Today in our society people think that they don't have to practice to get good. They just assume that they should get a HDCP if they're not as good. I think this comes from the everybody gets a trophy concept, oh they're to young to keep score, it's not about who wins type thinking.

Then as they get older it's just compounded by the HDCP league concept.

It is all straight races to 9 and 11 depending on game. Finals are extended. http://www.cbsa.ca/

It sounds like there is some money behind it. Rings and trips to the worlds aren't free, so it has to come from somewhere.

My guess is that the Canadian government might have something to do with it.

The government has nothing to do with it. It all comes from entry fees. I believe its like $300 for the open events. Juniors are free with help from a great organization that raises the money. The rings are gold with a ruby setting valued at about $900

Entry fees are quite high, the open events get a good turn out.

I can almost guarantee there is no Canadian government money coming into this tournament. The host room adds money, there are a couple sponsors (milliken? aramith?) that I think add some money or donate cloth/balls for the event and the room adds the money.

The apa runs that amateur tournament in Florida. I'm pretty sure it's a 256 man field too.

Thanks for responding. The event in Florida is that in more than one discipline? Also if a person wins that event do they go to the worlds?
I also wonder if 256 is a big number as compared to the number of entries in Canada, which has a much smaller population?

What Canadian pool org. puts this tournament together each year and runs it. I doubt the BCA would run something like that in the U.S.

I doubt there is any government money in this event. I'll ask Al tonight if he's around.

BTW, this event is run by the Canadian Billiards and Snooker Association, the national organization. I do not believe that the US has a national organisation (I consider all of the existing US acronyms to be private entities, not a national sporting organisation like the USGA, or the USTA). That is why we have a national championships and the USA does not (except snooker, how odd).

Dave <-- not going to nationals but hoping that one of his cues performs well and wins

Because the governing body for pool in the US is not doing its job.

On the other hand, the carom organization in the US (the USBA) just held its National Championship in Las Vegas with over 40 participants. This was the 45th or so consecutive year that it's been held. The top several players will be going on to the continental confederational championships. The US National Snooker Championships took place last weekend at the Embassy Club in San Gabriel and the top two players out of about 30 entrants will be going to the IBSF World Championships in Egypt.

Those two organizations provide at least partial support for the champions' travel in spite small memberships and few sponsors.

Maybe the governing body for pool in the US should consider stepping up.
