Why is it always green felt with blue chalk?

i think the blue is for TV but thats jive because snooker on TV in Europe is on green cloth, blue is for swimming pools, and green is for pool tables and refrigators are white, toasters are chrome with black handles certain things are what they are. I'm all for new things but please leave the pool ttable green.
What shade of green is that that they use on snooker tables...it's real bright...

As a former room owner I can tell you that making the chalk the same color as the cloth doesn't keep it cleaner longer ... :) it just makes it so you don't see the filth and it becomes an even bigger problem to deal with later when you finally realize you have six tons of green chalk on your cloth and you can no longer find the six ball. :)
Exactly what I was thinking. Just because you don't know it doesn't mean it can't hurt you. There should be a law that says you must use a different color chalk than the cloth color so room owners do what they're supposed to do. CLEAN THE CLOTH!

Cloth that's taken care of lasts at least twice as long. Why doesn't this matter on the business side and why don't players insist on it.

Or, in this case, green with blue chalk!

Green, being near the center of the visible spectrum is the easiest color on the eyes. Not to say this is the reason for using it.

Most (perhaps even all) of the halls I play in around Dallas have green cloth and green chalk. The chalk is a shade lighter than the cloth, but they are both green. I have played on red cloth before, but that was in a strip club. There used to be a game room called Carousel that had a nice billiard room (it was separated from the rest of the place by walls) that had yellow cloth. It wasn't that bad, but I prefer green. Though blue does look nice on TV.

I like green cloth best. If blue were beneficial to any kind of eyesight, how come makers of optics put coatings on lenses to tone down the blue wavelengths?
As far as chalk goes blue or green, doesn't matter. Please just not red.

Hello matcase,

the coating on lenses is not supposed to reduce blue colours - it is meant to reduce ultra-violet, which is the range behind blue. Films and sensors are more sensitive to ultraviolet than the human eye and reproduce u/v as blue.

so does the pink four ball.... and the cue ball w/ the chicken pox.

think cause and effect.

there have been some good points made in this thread but saying that pool cloth is green and chalk is blue BECAUSE IT IS. is like saying cars run on fossil fuels BECAUSE THEY DO.

junk chalk gets on everything, table owners shouldn't have dirty tables,
and players should carry more than one color quality chalk if they play
on different color cloth.

the rumor about the "pro blue" or w/e it's called these days is that the balls are more defined by that color than any other color and that it's easier on the eyes. :D

I was playing a friend from the UK who had his own chalk it was green triangle or something very powedery and it left a terrible mess on the table, it dosent bother me-a dirty table. but it was more noticable than blue

Thanks Fatboy, I was trying to remember the name of that stuff. How I can forget is beyond me, I used it for long enough! Getting old I guess. I used it because I always found I had far less miscues with it than blue chalk. I'm sure that's just psychological crap but then there's a lot of that in this game!:D

When I ran the gameroom back in college, people'd ask me the same question. Since there's no logical reason for blue chalk to play better than green, though in my opinion it does, I just told everyone the same thing. Green chalk causes cancer. ;)

Your right. One of my Schmelkes is dying of cancer from grren chalk as we speak.  :D

I accidentally used Silver Cup once. lol

Well Mr. Yow, I only have two questions:

1. What kind of chalk do you use?

2. Is it lonely up there on your pedostal? :D

Almost every pool table I come in contact with has green felt, and the owner is using blue chalk. I'm just curious why green felt is so popular, there are other colors of felt that look fantastic! Another thing would be why dont people use green chalk to help keep the felt cleaner longer?

The only explanation I can get out of it is this: If everyone has green felt/blue chalk, then they dont have to worry about a lot of people coming in with black chalk all over their tip, which would dirty the table in a matter of weeks.

What do you guys think? Personally I think that green felt does NOT go with the usual dark brown wood. They just dont look good.

I prefer birch trees with the the white bark when I play golf, the contrast between the fairway and the out of bounds is more noticeable and if a divot sticks on a tree trunk its easier to find.

I use blue Masters. Silver cup's aiight, I was just pokin. Though, it gives me chills to see people using wal-mart chalk, for sure. Lonely? Yep. But, no pedostal, just soapboxes. ;)

The Wal-Mart chalk is the sportscraft kind right? Ive used that and it sucks sooooo bad. Or is it the great value brand chalk, if its any thing like the great value brand food, then its bound to be crappy. Their crackers taste like cardboard. But their cheap!:D

I'm used to play on green cloth but I remember back at the arcade when they had black, red, beige and purple cloth.....yuck.

The day in a close future(I hope) that I will have my own pool table, I'm gonna go with tournament blue

Well here's my thought:
The felt is Green cuz it is easy on the eyes when you're setting low on a table. The chalk is blue to cuz it makes it easier on on the eyes during shot execution (even tho we never really see it the tip during shot execution), but also at the same time, makes the color different.
A table can be blue (which I prefer), which makes it very visually appealing with balls or w/o balls on the table.

Again, there is no scientific basis for my reasoning.... it's just something I thought of.

Anyone ever play on a table with red cloth? After two hours the whites of your eyes turn red. I played on all the silly colors that new poolrooms had afer the hustler came out. It sucked. Johnnyt

I have a Brunswick Montabello 8ft table with triple-shimmed pockets...with red felt. I think it looks fabulous. The wood on the Montabello is mahogany with MOP diamonds on the rails. The red felt also goes well with the rest of my basement. I have two English dart boards with red backboards...and a red felted oval poker table. The room's paited beige/taupe...so the red is an outstanding contrast. I had blue chalk...but it looked $()*%&@() on the red felt...so I switched to red chalk.
