Why is somebody called a pool shark?

Stupid term and can't stand it, not much different when someone calls you a hustler when you beat them in a bar or something. Too me hustling is laying down and holding back, I always say how did I hustle you by playing good and running out?

A greenie for that. This is exactly why Mosconi said he never hustled in his life.

Well, if you've ever walked into a pool hall and been circled and sized up by the hustlers that ply their trade in said establishment, you understand quickly why they used the "shark" reference.

Uh huh

LOL I sure do remember that scene; way back when, I walked into an old billiards place in San Francisco called Palace Billiards.

You had to climb a bunch of stairs to get to the 2nd floor room, and as soon as you appeared at the top of the stairs, 2 or 3 guys would approach you and ask if you wanted to play some......circling like sharks smelling blood.....

I think the term 'shark' morphed from the term 'sharp' as in 'card sharp'....
...meaning sharp witted.....circa 1800s, I think.
It became 'shark' as the term became more derogatory, because of the predatory way
of life and reputation for manipulating the cards.
Pool inherited this term, best I can figure..

I think this is where it came from. Depending on the context being called a "shark" can be a simple compliment. It's one of those phrases that has very little meaning anymore.
