Why not AZB Road player for a year?

I lurk here often but don’t post much but after following the Mike Wong thread I had an idea come to me.

By my calculations it would be about $10,000 to play the 5 big tournaments in the U.S. every year. Obviously some would be more than others but $2,000 per tournament for the Derby, 2 Turning Stone tournaments, U.S. Open 9ball and U.S. bar table.

How about doing an AZB Road Player for a year. AZ members donate money into a fund used to sponsor 1 shortstop or better player into the 5 U.S. majors. Any money the player wins would be split 50/50 between the player and the fund, with any money returning to the fund to be used for the following year.

In my opinion this should not be for pro players but guys like Mike looking to make a run at their dream of becoming a pro. The way the events are scheduled it would be tournament 2/3 months of training another tournament, giving the player a chance to work on any weaknesses and improve (maybe get coaching from an instructor member) before the next event.

Everyone involved could sweat their progress and performances to see what happens through out the year and see if we can take one of our own to the pro level.

I would leave the qualifying process to more pool savvy minds than mine, be it a tournament for candidates or a video of certain feats like beating the ghost and a list of accomplishments.

For $20,$50, or even $100 I would gladly sponsor a years worth of entertainment just to see how the AZB Road Player does, Together we can do this and see how it shakes out. Maybe the player makes it maybe they don’t but the question would be answered!

I agree, Chris would be my first pick. Another might be Lester Mulholland, from Grand Rapids.
Lester is more like a 'dirt' road player, than a road player, in as much as there's a big stretch of graveled highway between him and the local pool hall.
His best game is Rotation, but can hold his own playing Eight-Ball on any bar box in town. Give him a call.

If we're trying to grow the sport, I think it should be a young gun 21 or under. We should help them try to realize their dream before it gets squashed by the "Real World".

Billy Thorpe or Landon Shuffet are names that pop in my mind.

Tony cohan or danny smith should have a lock on this

Tony is really the best choice IMO of guys who don't make a lot of money playing tournaments right now. He does get the cheddar in action though. The man has a ton of heart. Danny is a cool cat and is a fun guy to watch and hang around.

I also like Chris Bartram for this because he isn't play "full time" right now and if he could afford to, had practice time and maybe a little coaching here and there he'd be a beast.

Okay I think we should attempt this so if you are interested and want to participate in marketing and planning pm me!

Thoughts for making this a reality:

1. Gofundme account.

2. Streaming...Maybe we can get a hold of Big Truck and see if he'd like to be involved. That way travel is synced up and progress is easy to keep track of.

3. Donation levels! Those who want advertising should get it by putting up a certain amount of money, those who want to streaming access for the year should be at another level etc. voting comes at another level, so on and so forth!

It is a great and interesting idea.

I would rather see the sponsorship be spread around. One event per person only.

What would the azb forum stand to gain by handing a player that never participated here a buncha money?

How bout you give me $20,000 and I'll hold a pool tournament for all the players to benefit from?

Gofundme takes a percentage of whatever money they take in and that's even assuming there's no paypal fees on top of that.

Killjoy here, but if our player(s) win, and we split winnings, would some tax official get all over us or AZB? I dunno, just thinking out loud.

I like the AZcutta concept, though.

That's exactly along the idea I was thinking of but Bartram and Chohan have stakehorses available should they want them as they are already well known pros.
Being from the Detroit area I was thinking of players like John Binion or Brandon Ashcraft maybe Alex Olinger from ohio. Or even players a little weaker but with more upside on age. Give email a year and see where they end up!

If it was someone from AZB I would have no problem throwing a little money in but I'm probably not going to do it for people that aren't even members here.
