Why not play 15 ball rotation?

.....I think if you give American Rotation a try and put in a few sessions with it that you will be happy you did. I was and I hope to get a league up out of where I play the guys are warming up to it now.

Hopefully soon AZBilliards will have in the 'Tournament Talk' section a new AMERICAN ROTATION Section (kinda like what they did for the new Wanted/For Sale section), where we can all post the Who,What Where and When about the current and upcoming local AMRO Brackets *(and have a National Event section as well).

Hey Robin... if you'll PM me your Email I'll send you some information on what we did in the Charlotte area for the Upcoming Derby event. We are about to play our finals this next week. Also if your talking getting one started in the Mocksville area, let me know when and how many players and I'll play with you there as well.

People are really missing out not taking advantage of what this game and format has to offer for American Pool Players.

yes WPA should think of your thread

I have always wondered why 15 ball rotation (the traditional game, not the new "American rotation") is not the chosen game to measure pro skills. Obviously I favor straight pool, others may favor 8 ball and one pocket, but as far as playing balls in rotation I don't think 15 ball rotation could be beaten.

First the break: Even though the break in this game would eventually figured out to a certain degree (playing position on the one for example), the congestion caused by 15 balls and the unpredictability of the full rack would make it immune to the problems of other rotation games.

Second, the gameplay: Safteties, kicking, shotmaking, position play, rotation has got it all. No one is going to run the set out, and if they did it would surely be an astonishing feat. No softbreak identical layouts. IMHO you have to be a complete pool player to play rotation at a high level, which explains why the Phillipinos are doing so well at all games, even games they have hardly ever played before.

Third, fairness: Although there is a certain degree of unfairness in the fact that the lowest numbered balls have the least points to them, still you will never get the sitiuation where a player runs all the balls but one, and then loses.

Fourth, simplicity: It is a feature of all good poolgames that they have a certain simplicity about them. Rotation has that. You score the number of points on the ball you sink, doesn't get any easier than that. One of the many reasons why bonus ball and Power Snooker failed is that they are just to darned complicated for any viewers to bother learning.

Fifth, integrity: Perhaps this needs a bit of explaining. To me there is something unnatural about the "ball in hand anywhere on the table rule", it feels like cheating to me. Shooting a spot shot, shooting from the kitchen and having the option of taking the the table as it is or passing it to your opponent are much better IMHO. That way you essentially earn every opportunity after a foul.

Sixth, challenging the pros: While I don't necessarily always agree with the whining that 9 ball does not challenge the pros, playing rotation ought to stop that whining forever.

Philippino rules anywhere?

Randy,
I haven't really worked on Steve yet about AR but have that in my plans. It might take awhile of just playing some games and showing them its not all that complicated which means I need to have memorized everything about it. Maybe we can meet up there one evening and play it some and they will see it and want to know what it is we are doing.

Yeah Id love to get some information about it so I will send you a message with my personal email address.

Straight rotation is an awesome game...was very popular back in the day. The U.S. military brought it to the Philippines, then we Americans forgot about it...the Filipinos kept it and it's a good explanation for their dominance in rotation games. It combines all pocket billiards skills and strategy, on steroids! I would love to see a tournament with top players...please oh please!!!!

+1 here.
I would like to see it as well.

Short answer for the OP :

I does not play well on TV or for crowds w/o knowledge of the game.

There are many variations of rotation, but Chicago rotation offers more of a challenge than straight pool, 1-pocket, & 9- ball.

Lots of caroms, combos, banks, as well as safe play. Strategy riegns in this game as you need stroke, perfect aim, knowedge of the table(being played), execution, and the smarts to play it "right." The pinnacle of pool (IMO), and I'm including snooker ! ;)

I know of only 2 ppl that will play it with me b/c itsa hard game,( not b/c I'm good at it, I actually sukkk !)

in the Philippines, 61-rotation is good when playing money games. there's lots of handicap options.
i dont think it would be good for tournament because it's too long.

Fb conversation after two playoff matches from last night. Names may have been changed to protect the innocent;
wow 100-99 mark over jason
100-98 john over ryan
You almost copied my score. Whatta battle!
I got so lucky that I pulled it off when all he needed was 3 balls with break ball in hand. Made 2 and hooked himself on the last ball. ; )
dude urs was a story of triumph and overcoming obstacles. me!? i just dogged an easy ball for the win! 14 was both our last ball for the win and it wasnt hard! my story is shit bro! hahahah
He was up 20 points at the end. 90-70 then I told myself all I need is 11 to have a chance for my break.
I ended up scoring 15
And all he needed was 5 balls and I grindin my ass!

I've played 8 American Rotation races to 100 with my wife over the past week. I have the scoring app on my phone and it makes it extremely easy to score.

I really like the reduction in luck factor. Everything you do in American Rotation has to be deliberate. I can see how it will greatly help our position and safety play. In addition to building skills, I think it gives us good practice at strategy and playing under pressure.

At first I wasn't sure I liked the point value of the balls. Now I think it’s brilliant. It really brings the pressure to close out each frame strong. It also encourages risk taking and creativity to come up with caroms and combinations on the 2pt balls. Your safety play in the latter parts of a frame is much harder than it is earlier both physically and psychologically.

We’re really enjoying this game and hope it takes off and becomes more popular. If an AR league starts in the Denver Metro area, we’d be interested.
