Why Was That Thread Closed?

The one entitled "Entry fee for the IPT qualifier". The insults were childish, there was nothing harsh really said. I've been browsing these forums for years before I started posting and people insult each other in every other thread without them being closed. Does this mean that from now on, if people disagree on something, and one poster calls another poster an idiot or something of that nature, the thread will get closed, or they will get a warning? If that happens this site could quite possibly become as boring as the CCB *shudders at the thought*. Mr. Wilson, were there some new rules made by Mike now that you're the new moderator? Are we not allowed to call each other names? Say it aint so!

What useful purpose does it serve the board to allow posters to insult one another?

If it is a personal swipe at someone you want to take, make it a private matter.

Take it to PM or email because it won't fly here any longer.

Are these new rules at Mike's request, or are they yours?

Whats next book burnings?

Ask him.

Otherwise, does it matter?

There will be no tollerance for flames and personal or ad hominem insults.

I'm asking you, what's the difference? You obviously know the answer. I also want to know if you are outlawing users speaking to one another in condescending, mocking, or sarcastic tones, since most flame wars start from those.

I truly believe that you already know the answers. If you need to ask or serously doubt, then use your conscience as a guide.

I've already called you on calling other posters "idiots".

People are going to try and push the limits and won't be happy until someone gets banned.

It would appear that some like to play it as a game.

I assure you, I'm not playing.

If the posts are derogatory and serve to hurt posters and are not good for the board, they will not be allowed.

There is a good amount of discretion on both parts.

Use good judgement on your's and I will on mine.

Why are you responding to these posts your now playing the game. Just do what you think is best and don't worry about it. You don't need to explain yourself.

The insults were IMO all one way!
wonderlan started being condecending and quickly, [ when challenged] moved to personal abuse!
To be fair, you should have been specific and given wonderlan, not John, a last warning and then kicked his stupid condecending ass off the board!

Gabber................ever heard of wonderLAND ?

Believe it or not, I like John.

My direction was general in nature and should only have mattered to the parties bashing one another.

I really don't want to have to be heavy. If people would just respond to the requests for decorum and find a way to converse without turning it into a brawl, I would be very happy.

Unfortunately, there are times when no matter what is said, it is going to be either ignored or taken personally.

Neither is good.

My interpretation of what "Mr. Wilson" is trying to get across is that he wants everyone to be polite or at least civil to each other on here. What folks seem to be forgetting is that this is a moderated forum after all.

I had a feeling that the IPT Entry thread discussion would be closed when I checked my e-mail this morning & saw what were, in my opinion, the idiotic & insulting remarks written on it. Sure enough, it was. The e-mail update doesn't show every new post written, however, after seeing what I saw in my e-mail, I don't blame the moderator for doing so.

If you want fighting, go on over to the pig slop that the unmoderated RSB newsgroup has to offer. You can say & do whatever you please to other people ad infinitum to your heart's content.

I hate seeing threads deleted for any reason. If the moderators feel a certain thread has gotten out of hand, why not LOCK the thread instead of DELETE it? The thread will still be there but no one will be able to post to it. It will within a few hours go to the second page of the forums and be long forgotten, like most other threads. The important distinction here is that the post was not deleted, but rather ran a somewhat "forced" natural course to being forgotten.

I see this at other forums and it works quite well.

I prefer to close a thread and allow it to stand for posterity's sake.

I was requested of to delete it and I obliged.

Dave

Mr Wilson is correct.. After the descision was made to lock the thread I requested the thread be deleted. The insulting and ignorant comments had IMO taken the thread to a place that I did not liked either.

Amen :D

Yeah, it really does suck when some of the threads that are deleted, have a lot of useful information, and they are deleted for whatever reason.

Why not just add another category like a THREAD GRAVEYARD, where all the hostile threads can be locked, and stored so that way, people know where they are if they want to look up something, but can't continue to antagonize and insult.

Mr. Wilson, are we allowed to insult/call names in the NPR section? In many of the threads talking about politics some pretty nasty things get said. There are also a few posters who enjoy taking some pretty nasty jabs at people of a different political party.

No.

There is a stuck thread at the top of the main forum that covers politics and religion.

You are allowed your opinion. You are allowed to disagree. You are allowed to discuss the difference between your opinions.

As soon as people can't keep it courteous, civil, respectful.....it needs to stop.

Here's a short list of attacks that won't be allowed.

Ad Hominem : http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ad_hominem

Flaming : http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Flaming

Slander / Libel : http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Slander

Profanity : http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Profanity

This is not meant to stand as the only set of rules, but it does cover most of the issues.

There are going to points left to my discretion adn I will point them out if I have a problem.
