Why Was That Thread Closed?

No.

There is a stuck thread at the top of the main forum that covers politics and religion.

You are allowed your opinion. You are allowed to disagree. You are allowed to discuss the difference between your opinions.

As soon as people can't keep it courteous, civil, respectful.....it needs to stop.

Here's a short list of attacks that won't be allowed.

Ad Hominem : http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ad_hominem

Flaming : http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Flaming

Slander / Libel : http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Slander

Profanity : http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Profanity

This is not meant to stand as the only set of rules, but it does cover most of the issues.

There are going to points left to my discretion adn I will point them out if I have a problem.

Are these the rules of the AZ Forum now?

What Happened??? :-)

Dave,

This advice is just meant to help you. On some of the boards I participate in, the offending posts are edited by the moderater with private warning to the writer. The good content is left up however, as that is the intent of a information forum. The possibility that entire threads can be deleted is a reason for me to not want to spend any time submitting any information at all.

Threads can go in several directions and nuggets of very good information, reasoning or humor can pop up everywhere. To simply erase all that when it's not technically mandated is just as wrong as the offenders who begin and fan flame wars, in my opinon.

I am just going to take a break from this and all the pool boards for a while. This kind of censorship doesn't really suit me and my contributions haven't been that meaningful anyway. It kind of mirrors my waning fascination with pool in general. It's ironic that on the cusp of pool becoming a financially rewarding professional endeavor I feel like just being a distant spectator.

Well, you all have fun. If anybody wants to reach me my email is jb@jbideas.com. Come and get me spambots.

Disagreeing that your contributions have not been meaningful, I just would like to say that I have gained a great deal of knowledge about many topics from you, John, here and elsewhere in cyberspace.

I empathize with you 100 percent on the irony of it all. Now is the time for many pool enthusiasts, industry members, fans, and pool players to celebrate and rejoice. I do have a strong sense of hope for the future of pool here in the States as it affects me and mine. Having said that, though, I too am beginning to feel like a distant spectator.

Have yourself a Merry Christmas, John. See you on the tournament trail.

That statement right there is reason enough for everyone to stop and think before you hit the "submit reply" button. Without JAM contributing to this forum, we all lose. JAM and Keith, Merry Christmas to you and yours. Peace, John.

This kind of ruling will create problems if a good thread is interupted by a couple of people arguing in the middle of it.

It would be best if the posters responsible could be taken out of that thread.

It wouldn't do us any harm to get a slap on the wrist every so often when we fall into personal attacks. We might think of wiser ways to present our arguments.

Agreed completely as well as John Barton.
I feel both bring a lot to the table and it would be a shame not to have them as regular posters.

Merry Christmas Rude Dude :D , JAM, and John.

What useful purpose does it serve the board to allow posters to insult one another?

If it is a personal swipe at someone you want to take, make it a private matter.

Take it to PM or email because it won't fly here any longer.

Think you said a mouthful....that makes sense to me.;) Nice job as the Forum Posse Mr. Wilson.

I think it would be real interesting IF pool becomes a financially real sport when the media dives into the history & background of some of the players. Let alone what some of these pros have typed derogatory to others over the years on message boards like this. Can you imagine if say a Derek Jeter or Roger Clemens posted some of the comments that pro pool players did and what kind of a field day the media would have? `

Since there is no way of knowing if a person is who they say they are in these forums, I doubt it would ever become much of an issue. It would be pretty easy for someone to say, "it wasn't me".

Keep dreaming Jimmy. When the media gets bored enough & pool becomes real, they will have a field day. It will make stories like Andro in MarK McGwire's locker, Sosa's corked bat, Favre on pain killers seem like a Sunday school.

I think there may be some intriguing human interest stories, if and when pool makes it to the limelight, but there will always be a little pool smut to pique the interest of the inquiring minds as well. ;)

How about the player who told his lady that the first big event he won, she was going to receive a new rack, a bigger set of boobs, that is, and as it turned out, he followed through after a large score.

There's a rumor that one industry member has had so many facelifts that when he sleeps, it appears that his eyes are wide open at all times.

An astute writer on the tournament trail is none other than Luther Lassiter's nephew.

An Irish snooker player left her family's business of sheep herding to come to America to make her mark in women's professional pool. She could recite the names of each of her sheep. It was a tough decision, but her passion for pool carried her forward.

On a sad note, a famous international player received the worst news ever that his baby had passed away while he was on the road in Europe competing.

And we can't forget about true love when one prominent pro met his dream girl and married her after only one month of dating.

There's quite a few human interest stories in pool. JMHO, FWIW! :p

Great post. I totally agree.

Steve Mizerak, a 7th grade english teacher in Edison, New Jersey, had enough spare time to become a manuy time world champion.

Tom Jennings, a full-time college professor at Middlesex County College in New Jersey, still found a way to win two US Open 14.1 events in 1976 and 1977.

Ewa Mataya-Laurance gave up a career in modeling to play professional pool.

Jeanette Lee reached #1 despte having the spinal condition called scoliosis.

Efren Reyes learned of his father's death minutes before his first round match at the 1996 Florida Flare-up, a PBT event. Clearly distracted, he lost his first match to David Howard, but collected himself and won nine straight to reach the final against Archer. Efren beat Johnny 13 - 2 in the final, and flew to the Philippines the same evening to attend his father's funeral.

Vivian Villareal recently located her missing child after years of searching.

Despite the recent loss of his child, Francisco Bustamante came within two racks of winning the 2002 World Pool Championship.

Pool is filled with human interest stories, and if the sport makes it into the limelight, as we hope it will through the IPT, the stories will be written and will fascinate many.

Forum bashing

If you want fighting, go on over to the pig slop that the unmoderated RSB newsgroup has to offer. You can say & do whatever you please to other people ad infinitum to your heart's content.

Now you just stepped on my toes ,YOU have no right to bash RSB ,We have one MAJOR problem ,We end up getting "YOUR TRASH" . You all know who they are
ONE of your "outcasts" is doing a job on us right now and has been for two years ....We are usenet based and unmoderated and have been from the get go
and just like you guys here we have our problems but we have to live with ours
Do you think for one minute that "IF" we could ,We would not ban or dismiss our assholes .....???? We are FORCED to live with it and unlike AZB we air our dirty laundry out for everyone to see on a daily basis and if that is what you choose to see so be it ,BUT,think this, there are plenty of good people on RSB as well as here but if you in your mind have allready chose to count assholes then that is ALL you will EVER see ....... and RSB doesnt need anymore like you ...

I apologize to anyone who might be offended BUT imagine how you would like it if I went to all the other boards spouting about "Big Brother"
taking over AZB ....and that everyone is now censured and free speech has taken another hit ????? albeit it is not a good thing to have bad posters
who love to flame ,It takes two people to keep it going and only one wise one
to realize the others immaturity and just say NO

Ratchet - remember why you pitched those people out ?? Well, RSB is where they landed ...........

RSB and for that matter usenet in general, well, somewhere HAS to be the bottom of the barrel and that is just where it's at.

My job is to keep this place from devolving into that sort of "anything goes" cess pool.

Why someone would take it personally that RSB is the bottom is beyond my comprehension. If that's your cup of tea, so be it. I doubt it will get much support.

I think a moderator should sit quietly by and do their job what ever they perceive that to be and not enter into a debate. Now you are slinging insults yourself?

Why is that so insulting?

Is it incorrect?

As far as not participating, right.

I'll continue to participate.

It's unprofessional and getting down into the dirt. Just not the way it is supposed to be done.

As far as if you were correct, it's not even an issue.

RSB wasn't always a bad group. It used to have some decent content in there from time to time. I don't know if those postings are still accessible or not but you would have to go back several years to find them. There was also a time that the RSB group prided itself on its unmoderated format.

However when I last looked at it, there was really nothing going on other than constant bickering & fighting; every indicator in there in my opinion looked as if it would only be getting worse as time went along so I quit reading it altogether. Perhaps "Ratchet" fancies himself some sort of RSB mascot or flag-bearer, that may explain the wording reaction (my "stepping on his toes", to quote him or her) to what I said concerning that group.

My opinion of the RSB forum still stands in that it is currently really nothing more than a public toilet cesspool. Its contents offer nothing of value, unless someone craves constant fighting & internet "flame wars". If "Ratchet" can't accept that opinion, then perhaps he (or she, I don't know the gender of the poster) should consider an attempt to put up some decent content along with other folks to attract pool fans in an attempt to change the image that RSB currently has.
