Why you don't let just any joker work on your cue!

I had a tip put on my cheap cue at Universal Billiards. I gave it to them as 13 mm shaft that needed an Everest tip. After over one week (guy said 1 day) I got a 11.5 mm shaft with a PoS tip and a yellow ferrule. I asked WTF they did and the guy said he had to replace the ferrule because it had a microscopic crack and that I owed him around $50 for fixing it. I just shook my head, gave him $20 for the ass tip and played with that ruined shaft for 6 more months.

Dud I am close to you. I will happily screw up your shaft for $20 next time!

I can't ever say it enough.....be careful who works on your cues, especially if you know they have no experience in working around them, building them, repairing them etc....

I went up to the pool hall last night and was given 2 shafts to go put tips on, when i came back in with the repaired shafts another friend of mine brings me his shaft.

He had given it to a hack artist at the pool hall that charged him $30 for a tip....he took a chunk out of the shaft right under the ferrule, the tip looks like he shaped it with a chain saw....and the shaft is now hourglass shaped at the tip of the shaft and ferrule....it was 13mm and is now 12mm at the tip and an inch back of the ferrule its back at 13m

That's got to be the biggest shaft i've seen.
according to the picture it seems to be about 143 mm.

...no wonder the poor guy had trouble

That's a shame and to think he tried to charge you $50 for a ferrule you didn't ask for on top of ruining your shaft. If the ferrule needed to be replaced he should have talked to you about it before doing the work and if it ended up at 11.5mm he doesn't have a clue what he's doing.

I know exactly what you are saying, but sometimes it's just better to walk and warn everyone else.

So many butchers out there think they know how to fix/repair/replace things on cues. Everyone should do themselves a favor and take their cues to an actual cuemaker. To the OP, sorry you got duped by a jerk.

Oh it wasn't my shaft lol, it was for a friend...The sad part is that the fellow knows me pretty well and knows the work I do and have been for along time....he also knows of another cuemaker/repair man in the area that is also definately qualified to do the work....

but what does my pal do? He gives his shaft to a doofus and gets completely crapped on....then wants me to fix it.

Hell that was the reason I got into working on cues....I was 9-10yrs old and my uncle gave me a earl strickland cuetek lol....after months of play i needed a new tip and brought it to a local place that sells cues. I hit a ball with it the next day and the tip pops off.....i bring it back and AGAIN the tip falls off....

I thought screw this crap I'll do it myself....and so I did, that was 15 years ago, shameful thing is that the first one i did looked like szamboti put it on compared to the hack job i just posted.

still can't believe the horribleness of the work that was done to that shaft, I'll never understand people that don't take enough pride in their work to do at least a descent job. IMOP its a direct reflection of their own lack of character, and low opinion of themselves.....

that is a nasty job...I hope the lawyer J. Noble Dagget can resolve this peacefully.

now i gotta wait for my flux capacitor to be installed in my Delorean to fix the issue

Ask and you shall recieve...

lol....you know I always thought that Doc Brown was saying it wrong or maybe they wanted it to sound false....because he says 1.21 JIGA WATTS....NOT GIGAWATTS

Little did I know untill a little research that Gigawatts or better yet the prefix GIGA is pronounced JIGA in the webster dictionary....the second preference is GIGA

in case anyone ever wondered the same thing lol

This was when I first started taking a serious interest in pool...

I was in Las Vegas back in 2006 for the BCA tourney. I was shooting with a McDermott M8F5 (original shaft). The ferrule seemed to have little pits in it, so once our team was knocked out, I gave the shaft to one of the 'repair' shops right outside the ballroom to replace the ferrule & tip. Picked it up and it looked great, so I hopped on the plane back home...
Couple weeks later (I was all 'pooled' out when I got home), I uncovered the pool table and started shooting with my brand new ferrule and tip... and couldn't make a ball to save my life. Ok, maybe I need to warm up, maybe I'm tired, etc...
Over the next few months I couldn't get used to the new tip and ferrule. We started back up in league the following October, and I still couldn't shoot for s*** !! A teammate looks at my cue, tries to shoot a couple of shots, looks up at me and says, "When did you switch shafts ?"
The shaft I gave the repair guy in Vegas TURNED MY SHAFT DOWN TO 11.5 MM !!!!

The only person who works on my cues now is Dave Leckinger, at Six Pockets in Rochester, New York. He does great work, and is a hell of a nice guy, too.
