Larry is the best by far but Dave Coles is most likely the 2nd strongest and owns the Carrom Room in Beloit. Both great players. 3rd in my opinion would be Duncan Kaufman.

Now you forgot about Pam Bell Patton... That's right forget the gal's. She is one of the best in the nation! Also Deb

Fred Ryser also owns a hall and brings a lot of great players with him when he goes places.

Add these guys to the list:
Troy Johnson
Craig Powers
Steve Hayes
Claudio Perrone
Tom Paulowski

Agreed, but is beloit in WI or IL? Just curious. Also, where is Nevel now. I don't place a few of these players in that category that were listed, but that may be because my standards are a little higher. Lamar is always a favorite, and I know that Jon Fields is great also, and may be better than Lamar if he is playing all the time, for Lamar is a working mans pool player. As for all time greats, I would have to say Gene Albrecht on a bar box especially, and maybe on a nine footer even. Gene and Nevel would have been a great match to watch. Nevel is unreal, with so much stroke, but gene was no slouch and had the heart of a champion. A former backer of genes said that Gene always believed he could win no matter who he played. I watched him play many a road player, and after a few days the road player got more than they bargained for. To bad Gene quit playing pool. Oh well.

I'm a WI product (Madison and have gambled or played everybody on this list ! now the real question is are we talking now or 20 years ago? I'm going to assume now so here it is . hands down larry is the most talented player ever to come out of WI. everybody seems to forget about jeff carter he is second. John feilds and dave coles are 3rd and 4th and depending on table size can be flip flopped ( 9ftrs dave 7ftrs john ) even then still very close to call. troy now that he is playing again can also be put in that group. craig powers , if on top of his game may be third. But he doesn't play much anymore.Ron and Randy are in the same boat. duncan and steve hayes and tommy P. are next. Gene A. hasn't lived in WI for 6 or 7 years so he doesn't count ( but an absolute monster on the small table) I'll post more later. great thread though , always love to compare home state talent!

Beloit is in WI, so david Coles Jr. counts. Nevel is by far the best now. I did not know craig was that good. I know that we are forgetting Marcus Aleman, a texas import from Duluth. Who is the best one hole player in WI? Also I forgot Carter for I know him only from Chicago. If anyone can get ahold of Jeremy West, he may have some input also. More later, and sorry I don't know everyone down south from the Pour House team era. I know that they are great also.

I just emailed him this thread. We'll see if he responds

I'm from WI. I play weekly with a very strong player named Dennis King and he has told me to watch Marcus Aleman if I want to see good pool. Dennis "Denny" King and Scott Chingo are 2 players in my town that are Master level players in the WAMO tourneys.

A few more

I go back to some of the older players, but Mark Wilson spent time in Wisconsin although he wasn't from there. Ron Dobosenski, Steve Hayes, Jim Fitzpatrick are a few more. There were a ton.

Wonder why there was so much talent in Wisconsin. Could it be the Billiard Congress of Wisconsin tour, which has been operating for almost 30 years? Just a guess. Larry Nevel sure cut his teeth in those tournaments and he was playing and dominating some pretty damn good players at the time.

i believe Gene lives in Kansas, never seen him play though, but have heard from a local player who won a state masters championship that he was/is a worldbeater. i've played with his son Gene junior, and have witnessed him run rack after rack.

If you go back 20 yrs. ago, how about Whitey?????
Or Ken Cross?

Chad D hardly plays anymore. he and his wife just had another baby not long ago. saw him two weeks ago maybe, and he said he hadn't shot in two months. after a few racks you wouldn't have known, though.

Gene is alive and well and still playing pool. I played him in a tournament just last week. He knocked me out. When I left he was playing Danny Harriman for the hotseat. This was in Blue Springs, Missouri - just outside KC.
