Wimpy Vs. Puckett

On ESPN classic they played a match between Wimpy and Puckett today. It was my first time ever seeing Puckett play and was shocked to see how much of a prick he was. He had by far the worst etiquette I have ever seen of a player on TV, and pretty high on the list of players I've seen in Various rooms. He openly was making remarks as to rolls that wimpy was getting, and rolls that he was not. Making comments while wimpy was getting down to shoot. He actually broke down his cue when he left the table with four or five balls remaining. Made it a point to start breaking down the cue at the table, before he walked to the sideline. It was a horrible display of sportsmanship. At the post game interview was still raving about his luck.
For others who know more of him. Is that the way he always was, or was he just being extra nice in that match?

thought on hustlers

When you run into that rare breed of Pool player
that is a true hustler, that is loud, seems to ignore
pool manners, makes derogatory remarks about
opponents, sharks a 1000 different ways,

its hard to tell whether they win because of their
mouths or in spite of their mouths.

True enough. The best pool player that I have ever seen is the biggest loud mouth, most obnoxious , cockiest person that I have ever met. He has been banned from every pool room anywhere near here. It is a shame actually, all that talent just gone to waste.

Brother U J Puckett

U J Puckett was one of the most colorful pool players who ever lived. Yes he was a great sharker and a horrible loser. He was not cut out for tournament play. His act only played well to the hustler cognoscenti. In Hot Springs, AR at the Oaklawn Park race meet about 20 or more yrs ago, UJ hung in the poolroom with us. He was 80 plus at the time. In those days I was a bad boy and did coke. (no longer, 18 years clean) 20 years ago almost everybody was a user, so we were snorting up in the back of the poolroom when unbelieveably, Puckett wanted in! We were all astonished. An 80 yr old man wanting to party! He laughed at us and said we all thought we were real cool, when actually he'd partied with coke back in the twenties! That's when I realized I was in the presence of greatness, an octogenarian with the attitudes of a youth. I intend to document this episode a little fuller in my next book, Banking With The Beard #2, where I will feature more road stories along with the instruction and systems. I loved him.

Puckett was one of the BEST & he counted $ good also.

U.J. was one of the all-time great Hustlers. If you were on his list, he could hustle you in many different ways. It all depended on which hustle he thought would turn your goose loose. Weather it took a "Red-Ass" hustle OR a "Sugar" hustle.
If you were a fellow player/hustler, he would share scores & spots that you could bet would make you some good cash - If you listened.
He was behind many of the Hugh scores at Johnston City and elsewhere that most never knew he was even involved.
I never forget a spot he gave me while we were in Texas one time. He told me of a bar in BlackFish Lake, Arkansas. My partner & I left a.s.a.p.
After playing almost 5 days of non-stop action we were up almost $7K. When we were burned out and leaving through the front door on a nice bright sunny afternoon - Here comes Puckett walking towards us. He was driving a real nice pick-up with a Hugh bass fishing boat in tow. He also had his nephew (C.J.Willy) with him.
It was just like in the movie "The Sting". When he saw California Bob & myself walking out, he didn't say a word, he just rubbed the side of his nose and kept walking.
Now U.J. wouldn't have given me this spot IF he didn't KNOW he would get his "IN".
I had just busted the best player in the area (Calvin) and all his backers. We had mentioned that we were headed for New Orleans. We drove almost straight through only stopping once for a 5-hour nap. When we got to New Orleans we went right to The Sports Palace thinking we could check out the action before getting some long awaited rest.
I almost couldn't believe my eyes. Here was Calvin practicing on a back table and waiting for me. He had stayed up (wired to the max), drove straight through and wanting a rematch. He had a new backer & bankroll and wanted to start playing right then. Now I had just busted him on his home bar box & I was really a big table player. He was a good bar table player but not really known for playing the bigs.
I told him that if he wanted to play me, I'd be back in about 18 hours and he could bet all he had.
As I was leaving, the deskman said I had a phone call - It was Puckett. I asked him where he wanted his "IN" sent. He said, we can worry about that later, I want to just make sure "I'm IN", down there. I assured him he was (now that he called himself in) and asked him how the fishing was back there in BalckFish Lake. He said - "All I have been catching so far were pretty small but his nephew was going to start fishing tomorrow and he had some pretty high hopes for him".
Now I just realized that this saga did go on (back & forth) for over 2 months (with U.J.) giving up good spots and monitoring our action everywhere he was sending us.
Some day I might write the final conclusion BUT right now I'm tired of typing and can just say - PUCKETT KNEW THE HOW, WHEN & WHERE OF HUSTLING!

You should write more of these stories. I know that lots of people want to sweep the "dark side" of our hobby/profession/obsession under the proverbial rug, but I still love hearing the old hustling tales. The truth of the matter is, in most decent money games nobody is truly hustled as an "innocent" because the loser was looking for something for nothing (or for very little) and just plain got beat at his own game, so to speak.

I did write 'em down. Didn't I say in a previous thread that I wrote a book?

I got enough hustling road stories to fill a library and if enough people are interested I will continue to leak them out. Some make me and the players look good and some make me and the players look bad. Either way, I intend to tell it like it is. Yeah, me and the boys may have led a randy, rowdy life, but so what? We did live, brother!

In picture 1 with Fatty playing, his opponent is a very young Corn Bread Red. I dont recognize anyone else. In picture 2, from left to right is Weenie Beenie -- before his hair transplants -- Luther Lassiter -- Harold Worst ( I recognize his type of bald head, Fatty is probably shaking hands with Joey Speith (I recognize the falling curl on his forehead) the next guy over, I dont know, but next to him is Don the Duke Tozer from Decatur IL. Sitting on the bench is Joe Burns from Dayton OH. He ran some great tournaments in the 70's. Thats are far as I can go with the pictures. Not too shabby, eh?

UJ also had a great memory for players. I played him once. About 25 years later I saw him at a tournament, I didn't say anything to him - he just pointed to me and said "Jack Madden, Phoenix, Arizona 1968" --- how is that for goose bumbs - should scare the pants off any player ---- he was a true craftsman at perfecting his profession - hustling pool.

These shots were taken at the MI State Fairgrounds in Detroit. Which one do you think is cowboy jimmy? I do not believe he was at that tournament. I have other pictures of him though from Johnson City. It was also promoted by Bob Mullins.
