Winchester

Last Saturday I found myself 65 miles from Winchester.
Having never played there but having heard John Brill
and Donald Purdy talk about it I drove up. The pool room,
Mustang Billiards was out of business! I was told the only other
place was Family Billiards- no drinking, gambling or smoking.
Where are the players going in Winchester? ( not that I'm
likely to be back soon)

Hondo, who told you no smoking, drinking, or gambling? They lied to ya. You can't find a game without putting your cheese on the line. You can smoke all ya want to, and last time I was there, somebody handed me a bottle to swig on. It is an old time kind of pool hall. All the $20 and up one hole you can take. There are some real shooters in there. This one old guy has five Rambows. Picked one up in Johnson City way back when. I work in Winchester 2 days a week now. You better let me know when you are out this way next time or I am comming to W.VA. to find ya. It ain't gonna be Purdy either.
By the way, the owner and his son are good people too.

I'll be damned!! Donald, didn't realize I was anywhere near Winchester
til the day before and didn't have a computer and lost your number.
The next day I found a nice one in Harrisonburg. Got beat by a good
player but played respectable once I got use to the table.
We were in Bayse. Pretty place but boooring if you don't play
golf and I don't.

I guess you know you were close to Martinsburg....we have no pool halls, LOL.

I have only been to the Winchester hall once about a year ago and you could smoke at that time. The also had beer there if memory serves me correct. I think most folks go to No.VA or to Hagerstown to play though. I really am not aware of anyone who frequents Winchester for pool.

LS77,

Are you from WV? I grew up there.

Winchester, VA has plenty of smaller action ($20 to $50 a game One Pocket and 9-ball). Doug Brackett is the strongest one pocket player and likes to gamble. A black player named Mike Whitmore also plays sporty one pocket and likes to bet. As far as 9-ball goes, Brackett will play and so will John Shelly, a heftier guy in his 30s who wears glasses.

All of the players go to Family Billiards on the southeast side of town in a small strip mall.

If you want REAL action, though, head 20 miles south to Front Royal, VA. Matthew Clatterbuck is arguably the strongest 9-ball player in the entire state, and will bet at least $4-5 thousand.

I have lived in the Martinsburg area since High school. Before that I was from the Southern VA and Gaithersburg, MD areas. (I moved around alot, LOL.)

I grew up about 40 miles north of Charelston. In the hospital I work in, there are 4 of us Hillbillys (amazingly none of are related :p ).

I heard if you go to Winchester, you might not be able to figure your way out ;)
