wing cutters are fast

LUCKY, LUCKY, LUCKY!!! COULD HAVE BEEN MUCH WORSE!! Wow. Do you think complacency played a factor in this wake up call?

That looks like it hurt. Wing cutters care not if they are cutting rings or ring fingers. Did you have to get stitches?

Complacency???? No absolutely not.............

After I did it .......... I thought "just how stupid can you be"???

No stitches, just a chunk of meat missing......

I won't do that again.....

Yea they will cut whatever touches them, mine was on my finger. Not very pleasant, Lucky it didnt "grab".

Actually it was so fast that I only felt the cutter hit my thumb about 10 times......... it was probably more like 100, @ 20,000 rpm.

The blood in the 1/16 in groove filled it up and the pic doesn't show he depth..........

I quit for the day while I still have 2 arms....................

NOTE TO SELF......SHUT THE ROUTER OFF BEFORE YOU GRAB A RING....

Router bits and fingers

Those thumbs bleed like crazy too!!

I have only been making cues for about 2 years...and I have always been very careful..until I got very comfy around my lathe. Then one night, I was running a final pass on the butt of a jump cue found my thumb shucked into my router. Good thing shock set in fast....I lost quarter of my thumb....from knuckle up, half way across thumb nail.

Lesson learned.....there is always time to shut items down.....

As an additional item...I hung the ER Bracelet above my lathe....as a friendly reminder. I also have my tag from going to the hospital after burning my eyes with cyano fumes....I guess I never learn.

one day, i just grabbed the first thing i saw, the straw, that i thought of to collect the rings,
rather then having them drop, since some didnt always drop, they took off like a ninja weapon across the shop
actually it works really good.
and it doesnt cost anything
there's an endless supply of straws at mcdonalds , bk& wendys

I just might try that straw thing. I usually catch the rings with a long allen wrench. I have been hit up side the head by a flying ring.... it hurts.

amazing how far they'll go
there's a few i never have found

I use the straw also, other wise they get sucked up in the vac. That suxs digging through saw dust looking for it.

Sorry to say this Kim, but I thought you were smart enough to keep your fingers away from the DangerZone.
Spinning discs with holes and fine teeth, are very difficult to see where the real diameter is.
I don't use straws,they are a good idea though.
What ever you do use, just make sure it is in a position that can never get caught or come into contact with the rotating cutter.

For a lathe situation with a parting blade, I use a dowel of similar material to what is being cut, at about 1/2 to 2/3 the hole diameter. I hold it against the inside of the hole by where the parting blade is going to break through. This will both catch the part and reduce the bur on the inside edge.
