With 90% Of Pool Played ON BB?

With about 90% of all pool in the states played on a Bar Box, don't you think there would be enough viewers buying PPV for it? I know that 90% BB and 10% 9' tables are just #'s but it is a very wide difference. Maybe it's because a bigger % of 9' players watch PPV than the BB crowd. I'm talking match ups like TAR, not tournaments. I for one would pay to watch 2 top players on a BB playing 9 ball or better yet...10 ball. Johnnyt

Perhaps you meant 90% of public pool. But even that seems a little high, to me anyway. I only know of one bar box in all of chicagoland. I would imagine there are a few more, but either way, barboxes are for sure outnumbered by far around here.

My original point, however, is that home tables are the largest market. And without doing some research on it, I'm guessing most home tables aren't barboxes either.

Bust my A$$?

Maybe, I was only 12 in 1955. But I was banned from that bar because my dad was winning too many drinks and dollars betting on me...

I was 14 in 55. My Dad owned an ice route of about 100 bars on Long Island. He made a ton on money betting on me on the bumper and the BB tables. I never was banned from any bar back then. I knew how to hustle well at that early age also. :). Johnnty

I think the people that only know pool from a bar table won't know enough to know the difference if they watch a match on a 7 or 9 footer aside from saying how large the table looks.

The people that DO know the difference and play on both sizes I think mostly would be interested in a 9' table match ups.

I know for myself, I don't like watching matches on 7 footers, especially pro players.

I've played my share on 10', 9', 7', 6', and billiard tables and can enjoy watching any of them with the right players and the right game on them. This thread is/was about the PPV business side that there are tons more BB players than 9' players. Johnnyt

Far more baseball is played in college stadiums than in major league stadiums, but regular season college baseball games are very rarely on TV, and it's for the exact same reason that few bar box events are telecast ... it just isn't the highest level of competition. A player's skills are not tested to the max on a bar box.

Johnny, maybe if the people that run these PPV events need to get a bunch of PRO players together and start having more BB tournaments. There are a lot fewer tournaments now a days and I'm sure pros would turn out for them as well as big tables.

The promoters of the PPV event could contact pool halls all over the country and let them know all of the details and get them to purchase events for their local APA leagues and players. Let the pool hall promote it with a cover fee and everyone gets something out of it. I think it would do very very well. I sure don't think it would hurt our sport at all.

Advertisement for all different pool products could be thrown in like a commercial in between matches and short clips here and there.

I like it. Johnnyt

Among the many reasons the public doesn't watch pool...size of the table is not among them.

I've watched a few BB tournament videos. I usually love watching pro pool, but the BB matches were very boring.

Bar box fun

I love reading this stuff from years ago! I bet we'd have had fun with the bumpers, even though my first sport was bowling till I was almost thirty.

Thanks, Johnny.

i think johnnyt 's numbers are a lil high also but i do agree there are a lot more bar boxes tha 9's .

take my area for example... we have 3 pool halls in town but only one has more 9' s than bb's. we have a chit load of bars in our area and every one of them have at least 2 bb tables and several have from 4-6 bb tables. it seems like every month some one starts a thread about a pool hall closing so just where are all the 9's you speak of?

as for home use i would venture to say it might be pretty even with an edge towards bb's.. a heck of a lot of houses just don't have room for a 9' so they are stuck with a 7' or 8' at best..only the wealthier dedicated pool players can afford a house big enough for a 9; or can afford to add on for one. in todays economy just how many are there that can do that ? most blue collar workers are family men that if they can afford a table its gonna be a bb due to cost and space limitations.

as for watching ...it don't matter if its a 7,8,9 or 10. pool is pool to me no matter what size table they playing on.

I'm not 90% sure, but I think atleast 90% of BB players think that PPV stands for Pretty Pony Video.

I have no clue as to how much of the population actually plays on a bar box, but I would have to conclude that it is pretty significant because pool suppliers actually sell coin holder/dispensers with sweet graphics on them..

What I am 100% sure of is that I find BB mind-numbingly tedious and that even seeing a BB fills me with the urge to defecate. So I am completely biased when someone asks if its great to have anything related to BB on TV or PPV or a stream or in an article about the merits of cue sports. But I will somehow take the time to reply to a post on a BB about BB.

A good point is that a BB is a great place for the youngsters to start out on.

Long live one-pocket!!

bar box

When i ran the Bar Rag shootout our flyer said anyone can get out on a bar rag. Funny thing was all that talk turned out to be all bust and no balls. We played winner break race to 9. Once in 5 yrs 1 person ran a set Dallas West against Omaha John. Alot of 5 and 6s. If its so easy on a bar rag you go to3 ill go to 1 you get the first break .Iwill try outrun the nutshttp://forums.azbilliards.com/images/icons/icon10.gif
