Won a tournament

I won my first ever tournament last night. It was a 4 table bar box event at a Chinese restaurant/ bar. Race to 2, 8 ball winners side, 9 ball on the loser. I played 6 matches, won 12 games, lost 1.

Funny thing is, I literally stumbled on it by accident. I grabbed a cue before work, as I had plans to get a few beers after work with my team. After said beers, i found a place nearby with food and pool. Only two guys in there playing said there was a tournament in an hour. I signed up on a whim and won! I think I've maybe played 3 or 4 tournaments in the last few years.

Got me thinking. I've been playing for almost 20 years off an on semi seriously. What percentage of players ever win a tournament? Is it maybe equivalent to golfers who break 80?

Congratulations! Always a great feeling, no matter what the tournament.

In terms of how many players win tournaments (or what percentage), it’s a very small percentage of all people who play pool. Once you exclude casual players and league only players, and focus on people who actually play tournaments, and assuming you live somewhere where they have handicapped or capped tournaments, it’s not super small.

If you’re only talking open tournaments, it would be a very small percentage - even of the subset of tournament players.

What kind of tournament has 2 different games depending on whether it’s winner/loser bracket? Congratulations I guess on your win in The Mongolian stew tournament 🤦🏻

Congrats.. I’ve been fortunate to win a lot of tournaments small and big and it never gets old. I can tell you I never care about the money .. the high of being the last mad standing far exceeds the money. I got a job for money and it can’t buy that feeling lol

Completely agree.
In my opinion, amateur tournaments and leagues shouldn’t have money prizes at all. Give a nice trophy and reduce admission fees.
A trophy will last forever on the shelf and tells a proud story. Money will be gone in heartbeat… besides, no money keeps the sharks and hustlers away.

The feeling of playing good is an amazing feeling, very rewarding.

ive won a few bar tournaments that paid decent cash like 100 to 500 years back . they are easy and you are about even money or better to win it.

plus you get to play the losers after its over and that is where you make the most. just give them the break or add the first shot with it.
