Wood Glue for Ferrules

This has probably been discussed, but I can't find it when I search.

I heard from a reputable cue maker last night that he uses wood glue or Elmers when he installs a new ferrule. I have always used 5 minute epoxy. He says that the wood glue dries clear and you never get a glue ring at the bottom of the ferrule.

He also says that you can use the cue as soon as the ferrule is installed, with no wait.

Anyone else use or know anything about using wood glue on ferrules?

Thanks,
Mike

I know cue makers that use wood glue, especially on ivory. I have not have very good luck with it. It seems too susceptible to moisture and temperature changes.

I used to use titebond for lbm. It worked great. they make titebond 2 or 3 now that is weather resistant. Not sure what formula it is. The stuff sets up pretty quick and if you can find white I can't see why you would have a glue ring. I have since been using west system. Most of the titebond they reccomend to clamp for an hour. I wouldn't trust it with abs but something with grain so the glue has something to bite into would work.

Exactly, anything with grain or pores, it should work. I used regular Elmers wood glue but I am sure there are others that will work just fine.

I know from furniture titebond works great. I just wish I could get it to stick to ebony. Some stuff is just too oily.

Has anyone tried the White 'quick set" Gorilla glue? I've never been a fan of their products for cue work but this may work with ferrules.

I haven't tried it. A freind of mine picked some up to sample, with the same idea that it might be good for ferrules, but upon seeing how cushy & soft it is in a cured state we both shyed away from trying it. I personally prefer something that hardens to at least a maple hardness, preferably harder. It might be fantastic ferrule glue. I hear it's good tip glue. I'd be interested in hearing results.

I use it , but have not used it for ferrules. I like it.It does expand and foam on the outside and is a white in colour when dry.

You can't use it on ferrule b/c it expands and might bust out the ferrule.
I use it for tips if not in a rush. Probably the BEST glue for tips there is.

I use epoxy, but sometimes use the waterproof titebond too. The titebond seems to be plenty good enough for threaded ferrules, but it works well with slip tenons depending on the material like some have mentioned. If the material is porus enough then I feel the titebond would be enough regardless of the type of tenon. You can feel the stuff start to grab in under a minute.

????????????????

Titebond makes a glue called Titebond Melamine glue. It sets up in 10 to 15 minutes dries clear an is perfect for lbm an ivory. It leaves no glue line an an does a great job. I think several cuemakers uses it but keep it a secret. It is avaible at woodworkers supply the same place you get your WD-40 for finishing your shafts.

Gus Szamboti once said that he used Franklin on all natural parts the needed gluing and epoxy on all unnatural stuff. He also said that he used white glue to glue on his ivory ferrules but that he thought an epoxy would be a better glue but that his customers would not put up with a glue line. This statement counteracted his first as ivory and a maple tenon are both natural commodities but "OH well!".

i use either Titebond or Gorilla quick set white.i really only use a very small amount of glue,so i don't think expansion would ever be a problem.the threads will hold the ferrule on with out much glue at all.

either one works well with no glue line at all.
