Any ideas on what this wood on the left cue is?

Looking at http://www.wood-database.com/ I think it matches Texas Ebony the best. There was only four or five that looked close.

The cue is a Brunswick Huppe Professional and I think its from the 60s.

Hopefully its obvious to some of you. I dont recognize it.

Thanks

Cocobolo was also one that matched in the database but all the other pics I could find of cocobolo look different. Its so hard finding consistant qualities with wood to make determinations. I hate guessing, I like to know what I have...

Str8eight - goncolo alves pic in the database looks different. If you can, post a pic.

Morado, Pau Ferro, Bolivian Rosewood or Santos Rosewood. All the same wood.
Definitely not Goncalo Alves or Coco.

BTW, even though 'Rosewood' is part of the name,
it's not a Rosewood though it probably should be.
Follow your link again, search/select Morado, scroll to the bottom of the page
and look at the pic of the 'finished' wood. Any and all doubts will be removed.

Rengas Tiger eh ?
Didn't even cross my mind.......still doesn't. Lol
You're certainly entitled to your opinion/guess.
Just curious, have you ever seen a Rengas Brunswick ?
I was surprised to see Pau so I suppose anything is possible.
I'll keep my money on Pau Ferro.

On the 'WoodDataBase' website, I've opened Morado and Rengas,
both in separate tabs, with expanded 'finished' pics for comparison.
This allowed me to click back and forth and to the pic presented here.
The Rengas showed far more open surface pores than the OP's pic.
Morado/Pau Ferro was by far the closest match. IMHO.

Far be it from me to critique such an esteemed colleague, but the reason why
Bolivian Rosewood is not a rosewood is due the fact that it is not a Dalbergia genus.

The jury is still out on the Bolivian part.

Hi Dale,

Hope you had a good turkey day (or night, whatever the case may be).
Yeah, I'm aware of the Dalbergia part but what has always been a mystery to me is,
what properties or whatever does a wood have to possess to be in the Dalbergia family.
Maybe our resident associate Kelly can provide that info. He's educated in wood species.
Morado/Pau Ferro is easily confused for Brazilian and is a commonly used substitute.
It has many of the same qualities and characteristics, both tonal and aesthetically.
But for whatever reason didn't make the cut to be considered Dalbergia worthy.
I guess a rose by any other name............

They are as common as King Dymondwood. I see no rays in the OP's pics so I'm gonna say true rosewood is out.

Zoologists often argue about the taxonomy of various species. There is a lack of objective criteria that determines genus (some plants get switched now and then), but a lot of the decisions are made due to leaf form and plant morphology. The timber characteristics is probably one the last deciding factors on whether something falls in one genus vs another.

Always good to hear from you too...

On a more serious note, I LOVE the Morado - makes a great cue - IMHO.

Nope but I have seen a lot of rengas. And considering that cue is a later model from Asia, rengas makes a lot more sense. I'm not even convinced it's a Titleist, even a cheap overseas late model. Veneer color & finish look wrong to me. But as you say, it's an opinion.
