Have you calculated the density of the one on the right? Mahogany isn't really all that dense. If it is really heavy it might be bloodwood, which is what it looks like to me.

you may be right boss
it's 3 x 3.625 x 47 and weighs 4 lbs. 5 oz.

For those dimensions, that is terribly light. Can you double check that?

A 3" x 3.625" x 47" plank = roughly .3 cubic feet. I would expect a board that size to be about 15-20 pounds.

It looks like walnut on the left and African mahogany on the right.

If you don't think it is walnut on the left could it be East Indian rosewood?

Ok, that makes it about 47 pounds per cubic foot. That is considerably light for bloodwood which is usually around 60+. Mahoganies are in the 42 range, so it very well could be a mahogany.

That would be my opinion as well - I have a couple of pieces of East Indian Rosewood that look very much the same.

the one on the left looks like Honduran mahogony (african is lighter gold). does the one on the right have brown streaks or is it gray to dark gray?

sure looks like walnut to me, I work with it all the time doing furniture and such. Keep in mind that walnut can look different depending on the size and age of the tree.
