Woofin & Barking

We've all seen and heard of players woofin' & barkin' at one another. It's not my favorite thing to hear or watch although at times it can get real funny. In an earlier post somone mentioned that at DCC Shannon was hard on Efren trying to get 9-7. Someone told me that they all do it on occassion and I told him I was sure that Efren hadn't done this as I have watched him under a lot of conditions and it did not seem to be in his nature. Has anyone ever heard of Efren doing this? And what do you think about it in general?

I think it is more of a cultural thing. I have never seen any of the Fillipino guys doing this, I have never seen any of the Mexican doing it either.
I think as Americans we do more bragging and boasting than most other people from around the world.
Not one of our best qualities.

:-)) I barked (chirped) at Efeen as he walked down the hall and he just smiled his little smile and walked on. What a chicken ;-)

Efren really doesn't engage in the barking and woofing. I am not sure how his games get made but I assume his backers arrange the details and he just plays. For the record the game between Efren and Cliff was 8:7 in balls.

Efren didn't really show in the action room at the DCC very much. The one time I can remeber him being in there he was giving some guy 13:4 for $30 a game and they broke even. That's when I saw Shannon barking at him. I desperately wanted to play Efren with that spot but the other guy wasn't giving up the table. I would love to see top players do challenge tables at events like this.

My format would be this - as long as the challenger wins he can stay at the table but as soon as he loses he must allow the next guy in line to play. The top players could possibly make a good deal of money this way and satisfy their fans as well. I would want it to be real gambling to make both players play hard though.

And I concur about the cultural thing. At the DCC most of the foreigners were quietly matching up while most of the Americans were making sure everyone heard them.

One of the most memorable examples of this was when Shannon Bryant was barking at Marquez to play some nine ball for 2-3 thousand and Marquez quietly, calmy and confidently said he would play for a thousand. Bryant said he would be right back and ran from the room and we didn't see him again that night.

Big Dog you are right on. But people should not take the gentle nature of the Filipino too light. Once they are forced to go over the edge they go all the way. Ask the guys who little Jose Parica had to beat down after being physically assaulted . These guys can scrap not only on the pool table.

It was posted in this forum that Efren and Cliff played one pocket for $10k a set. I would have to call this gambling, so I do not see why you are being hard on Efren. He has more KAHUNAS than ALOT of the other top players.

JUST ONE MAN'S OPINION

I think you're maybe reading more into John's post than he intended. I didn't get the impression he was being hard on Efren. I thought he was just reporting what he saw or knew. Hard to interpret meaning when you can't hear the tone of the voice or see the facial expression.

I wasn't being hard on Efren. I just said he wasn't in the "action" room very much. There was action all over the place and Efren and Cliff went to the big room to play their match on a tournament table. I wasn't saying that Efren was ducking anybody - he just wasn't standing around watching/barking/woofing like most people were in the action room.

I don't know how much cohones Efren has. What I do know is that he seems to outrun any spot he is matched up with. What he definitely has is otherwordly talent. To see the moves he makes is like watching art flow over the felt.

Also seeing as how a "Kahuna" is a big chief, I would equate this with a flush and willing backer and Efren probably does have more of these then most other top players.

Just for your info John. A Kahuna is like a high priest. Medicine man. An important advisor. I have been enjoying your posts and knew what you meant about him. A kahuna does not need to go to you. You seek him out an ask for an audience as I'm sure what happens to Efren when someone has the illness of over confidence or of having too much bulge in their pockets that Efren could relieve them of. Thanks John.

You see what happens when we Americanss try to use other languages?!

You get Kahuna, when you really want cojones . What he meant was nuts (cojones, en espanol)- not a high preist (Kahuna, in Hawaiian)!!

More irrelevant info for your ethnocentric head!

For those of you who care:

Ethnocentric means the belief in the superiority of one's own ethnic group, and an overriding concern with race.

I don't think any of the posters were being ethnocentric, I just think they were mixing up their words a little.

Efren, from what I have observed over the years, is a great player and a class act. It doesn't matter whether he's Filipino or not, it's his ability and character that should be revered not what race he is. And, because of his superior character and talent, they should put his face on a Wheaties cereal box. He could teach Kobe a thing or two when it comes to being a person to be modeled after.

If we really want to get intellectual...

There really is no such thing as race. If there were different "races," then, consequently, there would be a "master race." In reality, survival in this world has more to do with one's surroundings (i.e. environment, family structure, society, et cetera). Of course, certain aspects to survival are hereditary, such as immunity to certain diseases or suitability to the environment. But, the human body is ever so capable of adapting. Take an infant from anywhere in the world and place him in a family in a completely opposite environment. It is almost a guarantee that he will be capable of surviving. This discounts the whole idea of "race." If there were different races, then one race would not be able to survive in the environment of a different race. Obviously, this is not true.
As for "Hawaiin" being an "American" language, that is just ludicrous. Just because it is a state, does not mean that its language collectively belongs to the entire nation. In case you haven't noticed, there is no official language for the United States, nor an official religion.
Certian characterisitcs are often commonplace in different SOCIETIES. That is the key word people should focus on if they really want to differentiate between "groups" of people. Terms like "race" and "ethnicity" are too specific.
...something to ponder.

I didnt want to say anything at all, but the post by ajcu612 is one of the most absurd paragraphs I have read on any internet forum yet. AJ, I would surely hope you dont believe what you just typed, and if you do, you should do all the research you can. READ READ READ!!! What part of Indiana are you from?

Yes sir you are correct, it is a Hawaiian term, he meant cahoonies, balls, the right cahoomies are brass and clang when you walk. :D :p

Man lighten up here! Read my post again I was trying to add some levity to the post or I was just joking as I was LOL!!. You are not dealing with Fast Larry here but some one who loves pool too. You dont have to prove to me your intelligence. (Although you just went from prospect to suspect in that department) I was just pointing out the fact that people often mistake us Islanders as foreigners. We are a part of America too In the post I was also trying to pay homage to a great man Efren and give thanks to AZ'ers like instroke.

As long as we're nit-picking here, "alot" should be spelled "a lot" - "lot" is the noun here, pal. While I'm at it, I'll point out that "lose" is the opposite of "win", as opposed to "loose", which is the opposite of "tight". Often times I'll read a post that is so poorly written that I write it off as being written by someone whose second language is English...then I look at the location and see they're here in the U.S.! I won't mention any names, but one of the major offenders is an American whose name rhymes with "Last Fairy"! :D

You crack me up Jimmy!! I'd like to have a few beers with you, on me, and shoot a little pool for snickers and s___s!! I got a feeling you'd mop the floor with me on the table but what the Hell, we'd have some fun!!

Oh, and btw, we could also invite that "Last Fairy" and see what he could do. He'd either shut us up or we'd laugh until we wet our pants. I'm not taking any bets! LMAO!!!!
