I don’t think Ozzy/CSI are involved in the production of this event. This is straight from Predator.

But then again, they love to have third parties make alll of their equipment so maybe they have someone handle their tournaments for them as well. /s
I think Ozzy/csi became or partnered with Predator for the Predator tour. I don’t know for fact, but it’s my strong suspicion.

Predator and CSI were the "Founding Partners" of the US Pro Billiard Series. CSI was even shown on the primary logo for the series; it was the Predator/CSI US Pro Billiard Series. Sometime last year that seemed to change. CSI is still listed as one of sponsors or partners, but it doesn't seem to have the same standing in the series as it used to. It's now the "Predator Pro Billiard Series." And the events and their details are no longer shown on the CSI website.

If all we have to go by is the logo is smaller, I wouldn’t put much stock on that. Maybe predator just wants their logo to be more prominent.

My bet is CSI is still running everything, and predator is paying them.

That the events aren’t on the CSI website is intriguing. If they still have a major hand in producing and promoting you’d want that to be on your website.

And then there is also the lack of CSI dignitaries at the World 8 Ball trophy presentation.

Finally, a new pro billiard tour YouTube channel was set up aside from the CSI one. That would be an odd decision if CSI was involved because it means rebuilding an audience. The Pro Billaird channel has about 43k subscribers compared to the 223k of world billiard.tv

Dates: Feb 27 2024 - Mar 02 2024
Players: 64
From the PBS website:

Event 5 (World Championship): Double elimination: best of 3 sets, each set is a race to 4, if the score is tied at 3-3 in the deciding set, a shootout determines the winner. Single elimination: best of 5 sets, each set is a race to 4, if the score is tied at 3-3 in the deciding set, a shootout determines the winner.
There has been some irritation voiced due to the format. I think this might be unwarranted in terms of how effective the format is at separating wheat from chaff. A brief study shows that the best of three set format is equivalent to a single race to 9 -- not unreasonable. And the best of five sets used in the single elimination phase is close to the same test as a single race to 13. The shortest match in the knock-out is a 12-0 score and the longest is 17-17 plus a shootout.

Some people like sets and some don't but I think the format is a fair test.
The part of the format I dislike is the shootout. Sets are great.

Like in tennis they have tiebreak statistics for each player, it would be interesting to see top Fargo players' shootout out stats.

In the tour, evenly matched players could expect to go into a shootout 50% of the time. In the WC formats (best of 3, best of 5), going into a shootout is much less likely.
I do agree that is a massive improvement over a 50% shootout rate. However, it still means that during what should be the most dramatic of matches (tied sets, tied games in the last set, winner takes all!) everything stops, and instead of a nail-biting last rack everyone is instead watching an anti-climactic shootout. It's the equivalent of if when an NBA game is tied at the end of regulation, instead of getting more basketball they suddenly decide to do a free throw shooting contest to determine the winner. Or if this past super bowl after having been tied they just did a field-goal kicking contest.

I was going to say the only irritable point was the venue, but it looks like the aged property has finally been treated to a huge renovation with 1,400 guest rooms having been renovated, a new food court, the casino upgraded, upgrades to the convention center and the pool reno will be completed by the end of March. I may actually play in the BCA event next year.

Also for locals the parking situation is great! You can park in the back and enter the convention center without even entering the casino!

I get spot shots can create dramatic moments. Just look at the Pia victory in the world teams. A big part of that is her winning a world championship in a moment on her own shoulders when otherwise in women’s events she’s yet to win a major let alone be any threat for a world championship. So it was a great underdog story.

But in a real world championship for 10-ball every match should be decided by actually playing 10-ball, not by going into sudden death doing a practice drill. It simply shouldn’t be a part of the event at all because it’s not part of 10-ball.

I'll be there for a couple of days for the WC10B. I decided not to stay at the hotel based on multiple previous bad experiences. I think the new owners also have to get rid of all the previous senior staff if they want change.

A simple test will be whether small, unripe bananas are still $4 at the snack bar by the playing area. I talked to someone who talked to a food service person there. The cost of ingredients for meals had to be held to 10% of the price. I've heard multiple times that the standard for restaurants is 30%. Maybe that has changed with the remodel. We'll see if it comes through on the bananas though, because those cost less than 20 cents wholesale.

Yep, I go out there every year for the BCA championships and rarely eat in the Rio due to the insane food prices. I doubt that dumping a bunch of money into remodeling the property is going to result in lower prices though.

That offers some hope. I hope to go next year. Had I gone this year I would have stayed downtown or across the street at the Gold Coast given what I saw at the Rio when I went to watch the 3C a couple years ago. Nothing seemed open and they needed some fast/ casual options other than the little stand in the tournament area.
