In yrs past, and I'm thinking of Johnston City days, dbl elim straight pool was the way it was done. Don't remember if it was to 125 or 150, I think it was to 125 ea match.
With the Grueling round robin matches, it takes ALLOT out of the players mentally in the beginning of the event with not allot of rest, no different than winning the BCA 8 ball Open which is one of the toughest mentally to win. I kept hearing allot about players performances diminishing because of, mental fatigue, as I know most are physically fit.
To offer the public a better product with larger run outs, and the players the needed mental rest time, I personally think dbl elim, race to 150 is the way to go.
Why?
The equipment used in pro play today is more demanding physically and especially mentally (pocket size) than what players had to endure from the earlier 14.1 era. Each shot requires a little bit more effort mentally, and that alone will not allow players with these current conditions to post ALLOT of 100+ ball runs.
Toss in traveling issues to the event, and having to play allot of matches in one day, I think its too much to ask of the players....and in turn, the resulting product (large run out numbers) for the general public is not as often as it should be.
Mentally rested players can run out a match from nowhere and win, the Dragon product format will not allow this as often, and the more excitement the better the game.
