They are getting under way. Does anyone know of any sites that are streaming any of the matches?

THE PLAYERS READY THEMSELVES FOR BATTLE IN FUJAIRA

Standby for live daily reports from Fujairah in the United Arab Emirates and follow all the action as the 64 best players from all over the world make their challenge for the title of the WPA Damas World 8 Ball Championship and a share of the £110,000 prize money.

“Mad” Max Eberle from California says he prefers to play 8 Ball, “because there’s more strategy… In 8 Ball you’ve got to have a game plan, but you can change your strategy after every shot“.

Mexico’s Ernesto Dominguez hasn’t been practicing much, but says, “There are no favourites here for me, everyone is dangerous, and everyone is easy – if you make the balls you win”. A sharp contrast to his countryman Ismael Paez who says, “I practice all the time” but only time will tell who’s strategy prevails.

Elmer Hoya, one of the twelve U.A.E. qualifiers mentions that the quality of the field is stratospherically high this year, “it is much harder than before, so many (former) World Champions” and was also concerned about the talented, “young players with such good eyes”.

Raj Hundal from England, replacing Ronnie O'Sullivan as predicted, is probably one of those talented young players. Still flushed with the success of winning the prestigious World Pool Masters he said, "That's something I've been dreaming of all my life" and has just reported a run of nine consecutive racks of 8 Ball in practice!!!

THE OPENING CEREMONIES

Michaela Tabb is once again Senior Referee here and says she loves handling the special challenges that foreign tournaments generate, the language barrier not troubling her at all, in this, her third year officiating at this prestigious event.

The opening ceremonies start tonight with an exhibition of trick shots by Mike Massey and Fabio Petroni in the presence of His Highness Sheikh Hamad bin Mohammad Al Sharqi, Supreme Council Member and Ruler of Fujairah.

The players are currently loosening up, adjusting to the time change and relaxing before the opening ceremonies.

Thanks for the info, Dave!

I'll try to post some pictures later on.

here are the latest results. http://www.onthehill.jp/8ballwpc-64.xls ...I got this from a link on www.pro9.co.uk as cardman had given out. oh and btw, the difference in time zones is 12hrs ahead of LA time. so noon in LA is midnight in Fujairah
Thanks for the update MexPoolPlyr. Wow, Efren lost to Hisashi Kusano?...and by a pretty wide margin at that (8-3). Kusano also won his first match 8-0. Anyone heard of this guy?

I get a blank widow when trying to link to the
results. Is the link wrong?

The link is an Excel file and it asks you to download it.

Did you notice Joven Bustamante from the United Arab Emirates played Francisco Bustamante? Must have been a thrill for Joven.

It also looks like it was seeded, which makes Efren's loss even more surprising.

The coverage has been really poor whatever site I've visited. It's amazing the WPA doesn't take responsibility for the tournament coverage.

Different sites are giving contradictory information on the players involved and results. I'm excited Wu appears to be playing.

Lastly, I really would have liked to see Parica play. The IPT will tell if he'll be as scary an 8 ball player as I expect him to be.

What...the WPA provide a PR service?

They have improved their website, but their news is usually quite brief and well after the events.

Mike here does 50 times more than they do as a one man operation on a small budget.

Phew...Efren made it through the group stages by beating Kevin Smith 8-4. Others notables making it through the group stages are Mika, Thorsten, Feijen, Django, Alex, Salvas, Souquet, Lely, Foldes, Handal, Wu, and Van de Berg.

Does anyone know what happened to Manalo? His name doesn't appear anywhere on the spreadsheet. He must have dropped out last minute before the event started.

Here are the brackets for the final 32.

Notice the two matchups at the very bottom of the spreadsheet. You have the four remaining filipinos (Ortega is a filipino living in UAE) bunched up all together. After the next two elimination rounds, you'll only have one filipino remaining. That sucks. I guess the organizers didn't want a repeat of last year, when the final four left standing were all filipinos. In all fairness though, i think these grouping are just the luck of the draw, and I doubt the organizers had anything to do with it (but you never know  ). But it's too bad that at least two out of Efren, Django, and Alex (maybe all three if Ortega wins) are guaranteed to be eliminated after the next two rounds. I still want Efren to repeat his title, but if he had to lose to anyone, i'd rather it be Bustamante.

There is no Dutch - German rivaly any more since we won 4 out of the last 6 Eurotours, and the germans 1. We also won the European gold medal in 9-ball and 8-ball, the Germans straight and teams.....

The Dutch Dominate Europe, leaving Germany a good second place and a lot of history.... :D

But indeed nice matchups there, on our website we keep the scores as much as possible up to date and our Head coach send us text messages and daily reports!

Can someone copy and paste the results. I can't download the excel file for some reason :(

I want to know how Phil Reilly of Australia did.

Here's the draw, with local times, for the last 32 of the WPA World 8-Ball Champiopnships.

Alex Lely (NED) v Wu Chia Ching (TPE) – Nov 11 @ 15:00
Thorsten Hohmann (GER) v Elvis Calasang – Nov 11 @ 15:00
Ismael Paez (MEX) v Daryl Peach (GBR) – Nov 11 @ 15:00
Ralf Souquet (GER) v Chang Jung Lin (TPE) – Nov 11 @ 15:00

Mika Immonen (FIN) v Elmer Hoya – Nov 11 @ 17:00
Jorn Kaplan v Marco Tschudi (SUI) – Nov 11 @ 17:00
Niels Feijen (NED) v Patrick Ooi (MAS) – Nov 11 @ 17:00
Satoshi Kawabata (JPN) v Ibrahim Bin Amir (MAS) – Nov 11 @ 17:00

Hisashi Kusano (JPN) v Jalal Youif – Nov 11 @ 19:00
Naif Aljaweni v Ernesto Dominguez (MEX) – Nov 11 @ 19:00
Luc Salvas (CAN) v Nick Van Den Berg (NED) – Nov 11 @ 19:00
Christian Reimering (GER) v Michael Schmidt (GER) – Nov 11 @ 19:00

Vilmos Foldes (HUN) v Sandor Tot (HUN) – Nov 11 @ 21:00
Fabio Petroni (ITA) v Raj Hundal (GBR) – Nov 11 @ 21:00
Alex Pagulayan (PHI/CAN/Wherever!) v James Ortega – Nov 11 @ 21:00
Francisco Bustamante (PHI) v Efren Reyes (PHI) – Nov 11 @ 21:00

As mentioned above, it is some draw with the last match on the list being THE highlight. It's not the only same country match-up as there are all German and an all Hungarian matches as well.

Even with this draw, I'm sticking my neck out to say that Efren will make it 2 WPA World 8-Ball titles in a row.

And Colin, sadly Phil lost a hill-hill match in the last qualifying round of the Losers' Bracket to Patrick Ooi of Malaysia.

Thanks Cardman,
Seems Phil always comes close but cannot get the cigar in these qualifying round robins :-(

Hope Phil 'Smiley' Riley gets them next time :D

Hi Berry,

*lol****the only thing that matters really is SOCCER ...you know it and I know it *lol***

PS: There is always a next Euro-Championship....but so far we team up quite nicely for the Mosconi Cup, where we jointly will kick butt......with the US Team.... :-))
