World Cup of Pool - Day 4 & 5 Updates

Frame 17: Chang breaks, pinballs the 4 in. Ko is left Chinese snookered on the 1 (knuckled up). They push and leave a long 1 into half a pocket. England will have to play it. They haven't had a shot in quite a while.

I can't believe they sent Ko back in. He plays an up and down simple safe. There's a difficult cut on, I think they need to take a shot as safety looks hard. Well, they play conservatively again, and the 1 comes back toward the CB. Luckily Taiwan plays a lazy safe and Gray has a good shot on the 1.

Cruelly he makes the 1, goes around the 2 on the rail and snookers them. Peach jumps, almost jags it, but gets the next best thing, a snooker.

Ko takes their extension. He can see the edge of the 2, but no easy safe. He tries to kick it in instead, but sells out. Can England find those lucky boots that served them so well earlier?

Peach rattles the 3 in. Deep draw from Gray is smooth. Peach gets the speed right to the 7 and it's kid's stuff from here.... well should be. Peach needs to draw with the rest, this could be fun. He plays inside 3 rails instead, with the rest shaking like a paint mixer. They need to win the next two to take the title. They're off to the boy's room to stock up on magic dust. 8-9

Frame 18: Gray breaks. Slams it and 2 ball goes straight in. They're nicely on the 1 and Peach plays to the 3 but gets a little straight.

Gray tries to power up follow with inside with his knitting needle and figuratively rips a hole in the jumper... he missed badly.

Taiwan got left ok on the 3 and now in line. They must be out here. They win 10-8 and deservedly so.

Mark Gray needs to go learn how to aim with inside english. It's such a basic shot that he missed. He's missed a few of them this week.

Thanks for listening :-)

Thanks again for the updates, Colin.

Lots of work on your end and it is very appreciated.

Congratulations to Taiwan (can I still call them that?)
They played superb. It's definitely their year so far. Can't wait to see them at the US Open, their whole squad will be there and I expect them to make a huge impact, not just in their play, but in bringing up every other player's level of play to take them down.

And yes, Mark Grey needs to make like Chris Melling and convert to a pool cue. Just do it already. :D

That jump shot by Taiwan to go on the hill was awesome. Shot of the tournament.

No worries, helped keep me awake. I had the match on my big screen and laptop on lap, so not to tricky to commentate a bit.

They call themselves Taiwanese, the Chinese Taipei is a mainland China government thing, that they request the WCBS to use that title. It's political control.

Anyway, yeah, I don't like his cue, and don't like ash for a shaft. Too whippy for the big balls and will rattle when a lot of power with draw or english is used. I wouldn't go smaller than 11.6mm for juicing shots. My cue is 11.9mm.

That inside english power follow is the perfect back hand english shot. I can't miss it unless I'm so drunk I can't line up for the pot. Mark seems to think they are gonna squirt heaps when he plays them. I saw him miss a few hitting them too straight and he looks uncomfortable on them. But they are such a blessing for moving around the rails. The Asian players use the shot very often and rarely have any trouble with them. Darren Appleton has learned to use them very well too.

Cheers,
Colin

Let me see if I got this right...

Break not working: Check

Not getting the rolls: Check

Down 5-1 in a race to 10: Check

Still keep their composure and find a way to win: CHECK

Does that pretty much sum it up?

Taipei could teach the world how to play with heart and unwavering resolve. They never showed nerves. They just played the highest percentage plays and executed. Well deserved.

Ko is a on top of the world....his partner played just as well.

That pretty much sums it up. LOL

Basically they took most of their chances. They didn't play perfect pool, but they didn't choke on shots either or get down on themselves for the odd mistake.

It's pretty clear that they run their patterns in a way that is less vulnerable to mistakes too. It often seemed like England B were climbing a hill when running out. Taiwan looked like they were running down one when they were.

Contrasting styles that's for sure.
