World Cup of Pool

This match has to be one of the best I have seen online in awhile, a ton of suspense and seeing the greatest players fold and perform under the pressure is priceless. 9-8 Germany. :grin-square:

Now these 4 players know how Roberto "Superman" Gomez felt!

We got a repeat winner! Effie and Django did it again!

Ralf and Thorsten played their hearts out but it wasn't meant to be. I don't mind them winning this one too! You couldn't find any finer gentlemen of the game than these two! I'm sure they'll win this one (that got away) before they decide to hang up their sticks and ride into the sunset...

I need to get this match on DVD just so I can get a heart attack again...

BSCP, in your FACE!!!

Let's see how they're gonna spin it and take the credit....

I stop watching at Phil 7 and Ger 9 because my blood pressure is getting higher on the suspense. I open it again at ( to my shock) Phil 10- Ger 9.

That must be the most nerve-wracking world pool championship match I've ever seen in the Philippines.

Of the German pair, Ralf seemed to be the more steady player. It was just unfortunate that the last two games degenerated into safety battles, which fell into the hands of the Pinoys. Ralf lost the WPC 9ball title to Ronnie Alcano here in 2006, and this is the second time that he lost a world championship match in the Philippines. With his caliber, I'm sure he will win one here in the future.

I've never seen Efren miss so many balls in a championship match. He often missed when he had to stretch or jack up over another ball, losing "feel" over his shot or under tremendous pressure from the hometown crowd. In the end, however, he engineered the win by mustering all the safety and kicking skills in his arsenal, specially during the last five tension-filled minutes of the final rack.

This championship is not a battle of potting skills but a battle of wits and safeties, not to mention nerves.
Mr. Reyes should be elevated to God Of Billiards.

Just watched the match, and I have to agree with the other posters in this thread.

This match was AWESOME

Definitely the BEST 9-ball match I have ever seen. Lots of safeties, kickshots, pressure and 4 of the best players in the world dogging shots all over, with 2,000 Filipinos going nuts in the crowd.

Pool at its best!!! The only bad thing about the match was that I knew the score and outcome from almost each rack. Still I was really excited of watching it :)

To those who says that Efren miss too much and that age has captured him, well, how about all those misses from Django, Ralf and Thorsten then? Are they too old also?

I hope we will be able to watch more of the great Efren for years to come. Galveston - look out for the Filipino invasion again!

EDIT: Correct me if I am wrong, but I believe Efren has only played in the World Cup of Pool twice, in 2006 and 2009, and won them both.

Damn I should have been there and canceled at the last minute...

I told you, you should have come with me. Kam and Roy couldn't make it too. It was the best match I've ever seen live. The crowd, the conditions, the pressure... it was intense.

My congratulations to Team Philippines and my hats off to Team Germany.

(PS: After the match, I was in the press room with Efren, Django, Ralf, Toastie and a bunch of friends. There were 100s of people waiting outside and we got the best pool players to ourselves. And then went off for a late dinner with Ralf, Toastie and friends.)

Yesterday, I was in church at 6pm and when the Priest got up for his sermon, he said he was going to cut it short because he wanted everybody to go home and watch the Finals of the World Cup of Pool. He even commented on how Alcano rushed his shots during the lost semi against germany.

thats how much pinoys love their billiards

I mean the ref from 5 metres away you can see if arm hair touches the ball?

A more experienced referee would not have called that foul, Italy have every right to be aggrieved at a chance to come back to 6-7....

Where on earth did you get the idea that Cielo Lopez was 5 metres away from the action, that is nearly 16.5 feet or nearly the length of two tables.

There was nothing like that distance from the table edge to the barriers.

The referee was right behind Bruno and was watching his arm very closely, I was in front of the action and thought that he had actually touched the ball with his arm, it was that close.

The ref did a good job and called a foul as she should have done because that is the rule.

What a great match that was, Efren still has the magic. He made some clutch kicks and kick safties.
