World Games, Chengdu China, Aug. 7-17, 2025

The next World Games will be in Chengdu, China (Sichuan province), a city of 21 million people.

The cue sports participating will again be carom, snooker and pool. I think there is some chance we will see Chinese 8 ball among the pool.

For more info, visit the World Games page at https://www.theworldgames.org/editions/Chengdu-CHN-2025-14
Absolutely will be some Chinese-8. There have been WPA and MR murmurings around, and lots of rumors on the grapevine growing fatter and juicier around here the last month or so.

World Games plays three billiard games: 9ball, snooker, 3c. Ch.8b MIGHT be a demonstration game but it won't be a medal game. Also, i haven't seen/heard one thing regarding MR doing any 8b. Not saying it never happens but nothing so far. BTW, i tried watching the JOY Masters that's going on and its still boring as hell to me. Total snoozefest.

Chinese-8 ball will be demo'd for sure. There will also be a lot of 8-ball tournaments for those taking the trip to take part in around that time. MR for sure won't be doing 8-ball... or even looking in that direction, but as for China events... who knows 🤷‍♂️ :)

Heyball (Chinese 8-ball) will be included in the pool disciplines. Here is the official list. In the past, there have been 16 players per discipline. Heyball is listed as "mixed" which means both men and women may play. I assume there will not be a one-ball spot.

In addition to the heyball, women's divisions of carom and snooker have been added. In the Birmingham 2022 World Games, the four events were 3-cushion, snooker, men's 9-ball, and women's 9-ball. The 9-ball has changed to 10-ball.

The women's snooker will be with six (rather than 15) reds. This is a standard short form of the game.

At Birmingham, there was one competition table for each discipline for a total of four. I'm guessing that there will be seven tables in Chengdu. I hope they are all streamed. The was essentially no stream from Birmingham.

In related news, the IWGA announced today that testing for performance enhancing substances will be handled by the International Testing Agency, an independent organization. I'm not sure, but I think the standard is to test one player selected randomly from the round of eight, or something like that.

Edit: It turns out that there is a required quota for testing, but not for any particular round or event.

Slight overlap with the FL Open.

It would be a shame if this waters down the field at the Florida Open. That would be a repeat of what happened at the UK Open. The World Games gold medal is very prestigious, so it is fair to assume that some of the most elite will participate this summer in China.

I attended the 2022 World Games. There were sixteen men in the pool event.. The thirteen I can remember are SVB, Styer, Filler, Pehlivanovic, FSR, Ko Ping Chung, Zielinski, Ouschan, Yapp, Biado, Lombardo, Morra and Al-Shaheen.

In the past, there were 16 players per discipline. They were nominated by their respective continental confederations.

The men's 9-ball final in 2017 (Wroclaw, Poland) was Biado vs Shaw. It's available on YouTube. I think all billiard matches from that year were on YouTube.

All the athletes are listed here:

I see that J.L. Chang is still listed for men's 10-ball. ☹️

The only US male pool player is Corey Deuel, and he is playing heyball. Savannah Easton and April Larson are playing in 10-ball and heyball respectively.

Josh Filler does have some significant competition.

I asked Corey if he would play again in China last July during the Quincy meeting. This is a dream come true!

Looks like this will start tomorrow 9PM est.

Three Americans: Savannah, Corey, and April. The chart said Savannah si in 10-ball for women, and Corey and April are in Heyball.

As an aside, I thought Oscar won a free ticket to this event after he won the BCA Master's tournament in Illinois. I do know he hosted the Crocket Memorial tournament right before this. Maybe it was a logistlcal impossibility for him to go.
