My experience of this event was frustrating.
Various links were floating around for live scores, brackets, broadcast schedule, and streaming. I probably should have saved them off somewhere because if you close your tabs, you had to hunt them down. It wasn’t all easily accessible. The WCBS, WPA, BCA and/or World Games couldn’t put those resources on a silver platter for fans?!? And some of those tools looked like they were built by an intern in 1996.
You couldn’t see the Filler/SVB match. By the time they got to streaming matches, I was utterly disinterested.
The video feed didn’t seem to have basic production to it (score overlays and replays). It did have a good overhead view and some cut to other cameras. Sometimes they’d cut to a pretty zoomed in view of the 8-ball reflecting overhead lights. I hear the commentators were sub par. The post match interviews were a nice touch. The live postings in the WCBS FB page ended up how I consumed most of it.
By the time they got to the finals, I saw it started on the live scores page. But when I went to the stream they showed gymnastics instead. I gave up at that point. Once I saw Filler had won, I did peak at the stream again and it was showing the match (replay? delay?) which wasn’t worth watching since I already knew the outcome.
I know some players get money from their countries for medaling in events like this. I know some countries invest in their athletes that participate in IOC recognized sports. But sadly for the US all we get is banned players and a flopping World Games event. From a selfish US perspective, it does make you a bit jaded and wonder if it’s even worth it. It’s hard reconciling that with the international perspective that has merits we only get benefit from in knowing at least the international field of competitors is being supported and the world is producing the best players it can for us to view.
