Yeah - i even asked her in the chat if she was "'ready to play Earl in Reno"

I cant believe they have her at 2000-1, the highest odds of all and well below people like LJJ, Bernie, Raney and about 40 or 50 others.

Still Stan James did a much better job than last time.

I'm not sure I agree with the oddsmaker on some of his numbers.

In looking at the list, it seems like there are quite a few disconnects between past performance of various players and the odds that some players were given. Ellerby, for example, had the best showing among the ladies at the North American tournament, however, she's listed at 2000/1. Ouschan at 2000/1 doesn't seem to reflect her strong showings elsewhere.

This makes me wonder: How does the oddsmaker come up with these odds for the players?

Well it doesn't matter what the odds are outside of the top twenty. They could give you 20,000,000,000 to 1 odds and they would never have to pay unless some people started throwing matches. It's not like Jasmin has a chance to beat the top players in the world for 8 days straight.

First, bookmakers want to insure that they will not lose money no matter who wins.

Second, they would like the book to be round, that is, they make the same amount no matter who wins.

The opening odds are the best guess of how the money will come in.

As money comes in, the odds are raised to attract money on those receiving little or no action, and reduced on those that have attracted excessive money.

Betting with a bookie is preferable to pari mutuel because the odds paid out are the odds written on the ticket at the time of purchase. The reward for being right is known. With pari mutuel, you split the pool with all other ticket holders, and the payout is not known until after the race run.

Hohmann was 1000-1 when he won the World Championships.

While that is true, I think it is easier for a player to come out of nowhere and get hot and win seven or eight straight matches than it is to advance through five or six straight days of round-robin draws.

The fact that four of the final six and both finalists for the NA Open were from the top 10 of the odds list should tell us that this format tends to weed out the weaker players better. It seems like every year in the WPC one or two of the semi-finalists are at fairly long odds to win.

That being said, there is always an exception to the rule.

I am just a bit gutted that the World Open is not being shown live in the UK this time. The North American Open was live for the whole week. Eurosport ar showing US Open tennis instead!

We do get coverage but tape delayed the week after.

Come on the Brits!

I hear ya but i dont think that you can point to one tournament and have it tell us much of anything. Time will tell.

Group 26. Strickland vs. Ouschan. I cant wait to read about his reaction when she stomps him!
