What is this race to 8 crap? If they only play one match a day make it a looooooooong race. Race to 20 anyone? If it is alternate breaks then it is anyones game, more so winner breaks. I can't convince myself that this type of format proves a WORLD CHAMPION. :confused:

It's not a world championship. It is a separate exhibition event. I don't know whether any ranking points are at stake or not.

This is not the world championship, just a sixteen player invitational, and certainly not one including the best sixteen players in the world. The only reason this event ihas any real importance is the large first prize, but this event is, to me, not worthy of mention among the best that our sport has to offer.

Hehe well maybe they should re-name the event. When I heard someone say "Soquet won the World Pool Masters" that gave me the impression that he beat out the best player in the World for the title. Meh, anywho still I think the race to 8 is a joke.

heh even a race to 20 seems to be a joke among the top players, and when you're talking 9 ball it's a bit worse. I dunno where they come up with 8 though, it's an odd number... 7 or 11 seems more common.
 
It's a tournament with only 1 pooltable, with a big crowd and all matches being televised.

A race to 20 would make the tournament 2,5 times longer, less of the matches televised and half the audience.

Race to 8 & alternate breaks makes it exciting for tv and audience. Long races are great in gambling, but not on tv.

It is a real tough field... You've got all the top European players like Ortmann, Engert, Souquet, Feijen, Petroni, van den Berg, Tony Drago, Imran Majid, the Chinese who finished 3rd in the last WC, the 2 last double-world Champions Wu and Alcano ++ (I certainly miss Strickland or Schmidt in it)

Some races are 60 yardss, some are ultra marathons.

In Snooker, the UK championship final is best of 35 frames, played over several days. In the Pot Black, each match is a single frame.
