One quick story - I'm staying directly across the street from the humongous SM Mall North Edsa where the tourney takes place. This monstrous mall is mobbed with people every day, more than you will ever see in a mall in America. In the atrium where the tourney is held, there are four levels high of open balconies overlooking the tournament. The balconies are lined all the way around with people watching the matches all day long.
So I walk out of my hotel to head to work yesterday and notice a small sign across the alleyway that says Jack's Billiards. I never even noticed this place before, although I've worked in this mall several times. Naturally I'm curious so I walk over to check it out. Four tables, filipino models, in relatively decent shape. A game is in progress so I watch a moment. Almost immediately a guy smiles and asks me if I'd like to play. I'm wearing my sport jacket and dress pants and really don't feel like a game. He asks again, so I ask him if he want to play Rotation? He smiles and nods yes. I tell him I only have time for one game. Another guy (he will be our ref) grabs a tray of balls and racks them up. Now the smiling guy asks me what about a bet? Ha Ha, that's why I love this place, a throwback to another time in America. Sure I say, how much. How about 50p a game? That's penny ante but a regular bet in these little rooms. I say sure.
I find a half way decent cue and off we go. MY strategy is to ride the high balls, but so is his. He beats me easily. I will play him one more game if he lets me share his cue. No problem and he easily wins again. This guy can play, running out the last four or five balls each game. I hand him the 100p and ask him about trying me a game of Bank Pool. He has no idea what that is, so I explain it to him. I now demonstate the break shot and make one cross side bank. Mistake! He politely declines to play. Well it's off to work, my little excursion over. I love the Philippines, win or lose.
