World Sraight Pool Championship

Check it out on the AZB home page but quoting from it:

'The World Straight Pool Championship will be an elite field of 64 players including 10 qualifiers held throughout the US, Latin America, and Canada'

That is a terrible sentence but that aside, the absence of qualifiers in Asia and Europe is quite disappointing.

The last big straight pool tournament-the US Open was won by a European (Ralf) with an Asian who no one had even heard of (Min-Wai Chin) in second. Without Asian and European qualifiers at minimum, can it really be considered a legitimate World Championship?

Still I expect it to be great tournament which i will surely attend.

Still great news though, but yes I hope they have a world class field with sufficient qualifiers.

Hohmann is supposed to be playing though... I'd be surprised if the field is limited to exclude players from Europe and Asia. Don't make any sense.

true how can it be called the "world" championship if it's just the Americas that's competing. Maybe that sentence is just poorly worded because Thorsten looks like he's competing in it.

My goodness, doesn't America have so many competitions they call WORLD competitions but only americans take part?!

Where not Who

Most likely it means that anyone can enter the qualifiers, but there is an obvious geographic hinderance that will keep many Asians/Euros from competing. I'm sure Thorsten (and several others) will make the trip to North America for the qualifiers.

I hear Fong Pang Chao plays some mean 14.1; anyone think he'll show?

It's crazy.

What's worse is that legitimate world championships like golf and track & field are rarely given any notice over here, except for those that follow those sports closely. And even at that, I'm not sure those that follow golf or track closely pay attention to those world championships.

I am sure that Thorsten, Engert, Chao and most of the known World Class players will be invited but I just think they ought to give the Europeans and Asians who have shown such strength in straight pool some qualifiers in their territory.

I know the WPA WPC doesnt have that many qualifiers scattered about but they at least have the 'qualifying week' where players feel they get a legitimate shot at it so that they are much more inclined to make the trip. Not to mention that in 9 Ball, the best players are pretty much known to all. In straight pool that is not the case IMHO

PS- Thorsten has been living in the US for awhile now.

OK i just realized i shouldnt be *****ing- This is the first year, of hopefully an annual event, and you have to crawl before you walk. Each year Im sure it will get better.

I'm just saying, it was Canada, US, and Latin America. But then it says that Thorsten and I believe Engert to might be competing, so what I wanted to know is that is this competition just for Americas or the whole world. Either way this looks like it's going to be a great tournament.

No way-I guess i mislead a lot of people.

It's a World Championship and anyone can enter the Q'rs Im sure. It is just that there as of now, will be no qualifiers readily accessible (geographically)to anyone outside the Americas.

The world 9-ball championships were invites across the globe and the qualifiers were all put on in a single small country. This is no different, unless you figure it is better due to the more spaced out nature across an entire continent quite alot bigger then Taiwan. There are 54 people that will be invited, and you can rest assured that those people will be invited from all over the world.

I also heard he's downright scary playing 14.1 but don't know his high run. Unless their putting up some decent $$$ I'd be surprised if he plays.

It took a while for the challenge of champions to become international and now I hardly recognize any of the players playing for the winner take all. Give the straight pool tournament some time. Plus they will come if the money is high enough. Why travel around the world for peanuts and I'm sure they have their own world championships in Asia - one comes to mind.

Instead of having just one straight pool tournament and calling it a world championship, I suggest that dragon promotions have at least 3 UPA straight pool tournaments leading upto the world championships. The New Jersey straight pool championships was won by Thorsten Holmman.

I think it would be comparable to all of the 9-ball tournaments US open, DCC, World Summit, etc... that leads up the WPC. I think that it would make just one tournament a more qualified tournament...

Not intending to take the chances of other competitors lightly, but it's high time we got Hohmann, Robles and Schmidt in the same place at the same time to play some straight pool, just to find out who will be the last man standing.

I can't wait for this one!

There are some European players, that you never heard off, who have runs of 150 each week!!!!
Alone in the German Bundesliga where they play Straight Pool in the league race to 150, there are weekly runs from over 100, from unknown players.

Any 14.1 event with top pros in it sounds good to me.

Too bad the Miz is in such bad shape. I'm guessing they'll invite Sigel and Varner but I'm curious what other legends will get invited.

Hopkins?
Rempe?
Grady?

I'd actually like to see Buddy Hall get an invite. I don't believe he's ever been taped playing 14.1 but he's probably pretty damn good with his position play skills.

They better invite Sigel, if he does not get an invite I will basically lose all respect for the tourney right there.
