Am I getting this right???

They are selling tickets to an expo/tourny @ $30 evening session- $25 day session- $50 all day - $70 last day and $225 VIP for the whole event. Isn't this coming from a group (UPA) that stated they were going to be bringing pool to the masses? and... We need to get more people to the tournament events?

Is Barbera Streisand singing at this thing? I applaude them for getting such fine sponsership (Michelob, ESPN etc) but man that $225 for four days seems a bit steep for trying to get common people interested in your sport/game.

Chalk that up with 70-150 a night for a room and 20-30 a meal in new york and you are talking about one expensive weekend!!!

BTW anyone know if Earl is going to be there?

Assuming it's accurate, it's rather disheartening. This event, to me, had greatness stamped all over it, but if it has been priced to ensure that the many who pass through Grand Central Station won't consdier dropping in, then this tournament will prove a lost opportunity for the sport. It suddenly appears that the long-term promotion of the sport has been subordinated in importance to short-term profit objectives. How sad!

Johnny's info is in fact correct with the exception of one thing... the hotel is much more exspensive. I called a friend of mine that 's a UPA rep about this last week. According to him a production company is putting this on. I didn't ask him but I assume since it's a production company, the UPA doesn't have a lot of say in the matter. He said that their hotel per night is $150 and that's with a discount so the average joe schmo like ourselves would have to pay over $200 a night if we were to stay close because it's in Manhattan. I've already gotten Fri off of work and was going up Thur evening. I'm now having to re-think my plans. I have a friend I'm going to stay with in Staten Island so I don't have to incur the hotel exspense but I still can't afford to go to more than one or two day sessions.

I'm doing that too, yobagua. Though I may not be able to resist going to the third day of the World Summit of Pool, which is $40 (as opposed to $30, as in the first two days), since I live here in New York. The fact that its straight pool rather than 9 ball is also a motivating factor, even if Efren, Archer and all of the others won't be there.

I'm pretty sure it was an invitational sixteen player field event last year, double elimination races to 150. Hohmann put on quite a show last year, including beating Robles in the final. As we know, he's on US soil now for the US Open, hope he's sticking around to try to defend his title.

Thanks for the info, I should have just asked you directly. Are you attending?? Is this anywhere near Jose Garcia's room (I seem to recall an AccuStats video where he said he had a room somewhere in New Jersey)? Does Jose ever give straight pool lessons? It was very interesting to hear him say he didn't play much pool, and when he decided to enter the U.S. Open 9-Ball tournament that year he did so by playing only straight pool for a week or two before the tournament (ended up finishing 3rd I think). He was very erudite for a pool player. It sounded like he and Tony Robles are friends - that would be a heckuva straight pool contest.

If I attend, it would most likely be only on Sunday, Sep 26.

Parsippany is in North Jersey, near Manhattan. Jose Garcia's room is in South Jersey, not too far from Atlantic City. My guess is it's almost 100 miles from Parsippany.

FYI, Garcia is a great straight pool player that has run over 300. I saw him play in the late 70's when he was only about twenty two years of age. He was very highly respected, and used to match up from time to time with Mike Sigel, whom, I believe was living in Towson, Maryland at the time.

Yes, Garcia and Robles are good buddies. Robles beat him in the US Open Straight Pool event in NYC in 2000.

I'd think that 1977 World 14.1 Champion Allen Hopkins, who lives less than 100 miles from there, is a pretty good bet to participate, as well. Allen still plays phenomenal straight pool.
